From the inner sanctum of Silicon Valley and short-term capitalism comes the story of a VC who lived it, then left it and found a better way to build great companies.

Dave Whorton was John Doerr's associate partner at high-flying Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers during Silicon Valley's big shift, when he witnessed the VC industry pivot from a proven forty-year playbook of managing risk to something much more aggressive: "get-big-fast." Don't worry about profitability. Cash out and find another venture.

For a while, Whorton took part in this whirlwind as he pursued his dream of becoming the next Hewlett or Packard, starting two companies himself. But soon it all got to be too much. Whorton recognized that if get-big-fast was the formula for building a great technology company in the twenty-first century, that just wasn't for him.

That could have been the end of the story, but instead it turned out to be the beginning of another, deeply inspiring one. Whorton went on a journey to find a better way to build companies, a way focused on long-term stability and steady growth, funded through profitability; a way in which leaders were committed to a purpose beyond personal wealth generation, to putting their people first, and to setting up their companies to endure. He calls these companies "Evergreen." Another Way combines Whorton's inspiring story with his Evergreen 7Ps framework, designed to guide more entrepreneurs and business leaders to follow his path.

Full of revelations, practical advice, and real-world examples of companies going Evergreen, Another Way is as instructive as it is inspiring at showing capitalism at its best.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[Dave Whorton] paints an attractive picture of the benefits of taking the slower path to enduring growth." — Financial Times

"Has Silicon Valley lost its soul? Another Way suggests that it has—and shows us a way back to what business, leadership, and investing can be: a way to build value for all concerned. At once heretical and old-school, simple and nuanced, personal and universal, this playbook for why and how to build companies that last (and last and last) was so good I read it cover to cover in one sitting—and then started over and read it again." — Angela Duckworth, New York Times bestselling author of Grit

"Reading Another Way, I found myself exclaiming out loud to anyone within earshot. Dave Whorton's vision of leadership hearkens back to the virtues of a bygone era: purpose, endurance, character, humility, integrity. He inspires by insisting on the timeless and true. This is unlike any other leadership book I've read." — Susan Cain, #1 bestselling author of Quiet and Bittersweet, and host of The Quiet Life Substack

"What a gift Another Way is for all Leaders whose goal is to create a positive and lasting legacy. It is certain to become the ‘Bible’ for all values driven leaders!!" — Ann Rhoades, President PeopleInk; EVP and Co-founding Exec at JetBlue Airways; Vice president Southwest Airlines

Advance Praise for Another Way:

"Another Way is a revelatory look at how some of America's most successful companies have stayed private, profitable, and true to their values for generations. Whorton's analysis offers a refreshing counterpoint to today's obsession with quick exits and fast fortunes. And his stories of these Evergreen companies will inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs." — Daniel H. Pink, New York Times bestselling author, Drive, To Sell Is Human, and When

"Dave Whorton's years immersed in the get-big-fast circles of investor financing led him to unearth seven Evergreen principles, each offering invaluable inspiration and guidance to those wanting to build an enduring enterprise. Another Way truly offers a better way!" — James H. Gilmore, coauthor, The Experience Economy

"Another Way is a transformative guide for entrepreneurs seeking purpose beyond profit. A must-read for those wanting to build meaningful, sustainable businesses." — Howard Behar, former President, Starbucks

"Dave Whorton is a visionary whose story is nothing short of remarkable. This superb book captures his inspiring journey and shows us the principles and keys to building a company—and a legacy—that endures." — Stephen M. R. Covey, New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, The Speed of Trust and Trust & Inspire

"This book provides the antithesis to the American get-big-fast mantra and points the way to an economy where millions of small and midsized companies win, not just a few superstars—a correction America desperately needs." — Hermann Simon, cofounder and honorary Chairman, Simon-Kucher

"The writing, candor, and concreteness make this a unique and practical book that will advance the message that there is 'another way' to do business—one that creates real, lasting value." — Dennis Jaffe, Senior Research Fellow, BanyanGlobal Family Business Advisors

People First Wisdom for Sustainable Evergreen Capitalism
5 out of 5 stars
People First Wisdom for Sustainable Evergreen Capitalism
Whorton and Burlingham provide wonderfully rich lessons and wisdom learned from great PRIVATE companies. They also share the lesser-known facts that many of the most successful companies today were sustainable without outside capital. They show ways to enrich lots of contributors instead of just concentrated wealth for a few. Their personal experience over decades taps into other great leaders like Jack Stack that have led the development of sustainable Evergreen companies that can last centuries by putting People First. What a wonderful celebration of healthy ways to share the riches of capitalism across our communities.

Great read on the insights of a venture capital superstar finding a different path with evergreen privately owned companies

Bo Burlingham now has to rank up there with Jim Collins and Dan Pink as one of the most influential business writers of my generation.
Bo has created 3 meaningful movements that have positively impacted millions (my best guess) of employees across America.
    1) His 1992 book with Jack Stack launched "The Great Game of Business" movement (greatgame.com), which has taught employees worldwide how to participate in and actively benefit from running a great business.
    2) His 2005 book "Small Giants" launched the Small Giants Community (smallgiants.org), which has educated thousands of businesses and their team members on how to be great while staying small.
    3) And now his 2025 book "Another Way," with Dave Whorton, is the natural follow-on to his 2015 article in Inc magazine that nearly doubled membership in the startup Tugboat Institute (tugboatinstitute.com). For those business leaders out there who want to run and build an enduring, Evergreen business that stays profitable and positively impacts their employees and communities, the Tugboat Institute is for you.
"Another Way" describes how Dave Whorton began his career at HP, where Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard created an Evergreen culture that likely got destroyed (in my opinion) by going public, then moved to venture capital where he invested in Google at the beginning, to private equity where he experienced how financial gain matters more than anything else, to his discovery of really well run private companies that have lasted generations by staying private and staying true to their principles.
This is another great read from Bo Burlingham. And kudos to Dave Whorton for sharing so many personal stories and making the personal investment in Tugboat Institute and this book to bring these companies together for the benefit of employed people everywhere.

Another Way is a refreshing, timely reminder that business can be both principled and powerful. As a fan of the book Small Giants, this book is a great follow up and provides more insights for a private and purposeful company. Dave Whorton challenges the hyper-growth, exit-obsessed narrative and offers a compelling vision for companies that are built to endure—and to serve. It’s part manifesto, part masterclass in values-driven leadership, and it left me deeply encouraged. If you're a founder, investor, or leader who believes business should mean more than just shareholder returns, this book is for you.

This book is a breath of fresh air… outlining a compelling alternative to conventional business thinking focused on rapid growth and short-term gains. The book is grounded in real-world examples of leaders who prioritize purpose, people, and long-term sustainability over quick wins. Through real stories and hard-earned wisdom, he makes a powerful case for the Evergreen movement and shows that long-term thinking isn’t just idealistic—it’s practical and profitable. I highly recommend this book for leaders or aspiring entrepreneurs interested in building a business for the long-term with a focus on compounded growth over many decades while improving the lives of its employees and the communities they serve.

Dave Whorton and Bo Burlingham have written a timely and important book on how business can be done the right way - serving the needs of all stakeholders while remaining focused on building a successful business. In an era when all the hype surrounds turbo-charged growth with no care for the how or the why, Dave and Bo provide ample evidence of a better way. To those entrepreneurs, CEO's, owners, or family businesses who want their business life to reflect their personal values, this is the book for you. You are not alone!

Dave Wharton’s “discovery” of the strength of family-owned businesses (and other forms of private business ownership) is something that has been known to many of us for a long time. As a venture capitalist, Dave, with Bo Burlingham, bring a fresh perspective that is helpful to me as I lead my family business.
