Still high and mighty! The Showtime® hit series "Nurse Jackie" ended season two with the ugly truth closing in on super-nurse Jackie Peyton. Jackie's best friend and husband put the pieces together about her pill-popping ways and confronted her about her addiction. But if the people in her life think one little intervention is going to stop her, they don't know Jackie. The great white liar returns for another hilarious season of 12 episodes on 3 discs.
Amazon.com
In season two, Nurse Jackie's title character was hiding prescription drugs in her daughters' plastic Easter eggs. Now, in season three (with 12 episodes, plus bonus material, on three discs), she's stealing pain medicine intended for cancer patients. And so continues the slow but inexorable downward spiral of Jackie Peyton (Emmy winner Edie Falco, excellent as always), one of the more conflicted and nuanced individuals on TV. It's not a pretty sight--compelling, yes, and often darkly funny, but sometimes also hard to watch, as a basically appealing character's reaction to the deep hole she's put herself in is to pull out a shovel and keep digging. As the season opens, Jackie has rejected an attempt at a drug intervention by husband Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) and best friend Dr. O'Hara (Eve Best). This is a "world-class liar," as one character describes her, and by now Jackie's very skilled at denying she has a habit while taking ever more sneaky steps to satisfy it, regardless of the effects on her relationships with anyone in her orbit (the task doesn't get any easier when her dealer is run over by a truck). Still, when it comes to the patients, she's also the most caring, if occasionally vengeful, caregiver at New York's All Saints Hospital, a nurse who comforts a father whose son has just died of renal failure, blindsides a jerk on a skateboard who nearly runs over an elderly woman (breaking his wrist in the process), or helps a kid whose own mother is a hopeless druggie. Meanwhile, the ensemble work by the other regular members of the cast--nurses Zoey (Merritt Wever), Thor (Stephen Wallem), Sam (Arjun Gupta), and threatening newcomer Kelly (Gbenga Akinnagbe); preening Dr. Cooper (Peter Facinelli); boss Gloria Akalitus (Anna Deavere Smith); and pharmacist/sometime boyfriend Eddie (Paul Schulze)--is better than ever at maintaining the show's balance of pathos, quirky humor, and interpersonal drama. There are also a few curves thrown our way--especially in episode 12, when an out-of-left-field confession reveals Jackie to be a first-class hypocrite on top of everything else--that are sure to keep viewers coming back for season four. --Sam Graham

Handsome Package
Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2013"Nurse Jackie Season 3" keeps up the heady pace from the first two seasons. We have the addition of "temp nurse" Kelly Slater played by Gbenga Akinnagbe, a foil for Jackie Peyton. The last episode with Kelly & Jackie in the bar ends with a Falco's first belly laugh on the show. Edie Falco is amazing, playing the complexities of Jackie Peyton with subtly & believability. Steve Buscemi's brother Michael continues his appearances as God, the neighbor who berates pedestrians from his upstairs apartment window, being befriended by Zoey. One of the highlights of the show is the amazing guest stars they bring on. The legendary Marian Seldes guest stars on the episode "When the Saints Go" as a 97-year-old society woman relegated to a nursing home that will give her fruit juice, but refuses her a glass of sherry -- which Dr. O'Hara tries to prescribe. Seldes is a veteran Broadway actress who won a Tony in 1967 for Edward Albee's "A Delicate Balance." The depth of performance in her small cameo is breathtaking. Bill Sage continues his reoccurring role as the drug dealer Bill until an unexpected turn of events. Eve Best expands the range of Dr. O'Hara's character, as we see her dealing with trying to heal her relationship with Jackie. Paul Schulze who plays Eddie gives her an ultimate compliment in the DVD extras saying that Best always begins a take in the middle of doing something; we always believe we're just dropping in on moments in her day. The relationship with Jackie's husband Kevin fractures as there is a reversal in our expectation of what is to happen in a big dramatic moment. This 12-episode Blue Ray disc is a handsome package with a show that is eminently re-watchable as a favorite rainy day series. Enjoy!

First class comedy/drama, never a stale moment.
Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2014I'd always overlooked "Nurse Jackie" as I am a big fan of spy shows, thrillers, and scary stories. For some reason I decided to see what it was like, and have been completely hooked ever since. Seeing that Steve Buscemi is one of the directors intrigued me.
There hasn't been a false line in four seasons! Nothing gets old or stale.
The characters are superbly played. The drama is a half hour of fast action with fast glimpses of the All Saint's Crew, Jackie's family, and others, through which their personality is revealed in detail often missing in far longer shows. You really get to know these people and can't wait to find out what happens next. The rotation of producers and directors is a good thing, probably a reason the show is so alive, never stale or trite.
Not for kids, really. The language is the kind you hope they never pick up, but is the way most of us seem to talk these days. There are fairly vivid sex scenes also. All the X-rated material is appropriate when used and an integral part of the plot, never something pasted on to keep the audience watching. I was surprised that my daughter in her late twenties was somewhat shocked by the show, as she has encountered all sorts of people in school and work.
Highly recommended but not for authoritarian personalities...

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 24, 2019Nurse Jackie is such a good show. It's very entertaining and keeps me absorbed all through it. Great ending for this one; it was a shock. All the characters are very good. I am now looking forward to buying season 4.

Reviewed in France on February 16, 2013Que du bonheur.

Reviewed in Spain on January 10, 2014Capítulos cortos pero certeros.
