He oversaw the first of the country's robotic missions to the Moon, Venus and Mars. He headed up the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where the Explorer 1 (launched Jan. 31, 1958) was built and where he worked closely with the famous German rocketeer Dr. Wernher von Braun. He appeared on two covers of Time Magazine, and was awarded the National Medal of Science by Ronald Reagan in 1987, among his numerous awards. He died at his home in La Cañada Flintridge, California, at the age of 93.
