In cases where a country does not have its own NRB, the International Science Council acts as the de facto NRB. The International Science Council also acts as the NRB for the Global South.

National Representative Bodies (NRBs)

Once nominations are submitted, National Representative Bodies (NRBs) – national academies, research councils and other leading national scientific organizations – review the nominations. Their role is to ensure fair opportunity for all eligible scientists, with research excellence guiding the evaluation process.

In cases where a country does not have its own NRB, the International Science Council fulfils this role. The International Science Council also acts as a key organization to widen the call for participation across the global academic community, with a focus on key regions in the global south.

  • The African Academy of Sciences is a non-political, not-for-profit pan-African organization, whose vision is to see transformed lives through science and has a tripartite mandate to pursue excellence by recognising leading scholars and achievers; to provide advisory services and act as a think-tank for shaping Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) strategies and policies in Africa, and to implement key STI programmes that have an impact on challenges of development.

  • The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is a non-profit organization advancing the scientific frontiers on inter-disciplinary climate impact research for global sustainability, and contributing knowledge and solutions for a safe and just climate. The mission of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research is to integrate the latest understanding of the Earth system with the assessment of climate risks, and with the exploration of policies and pathways towards a manageable climate future.

  • The International Science Council is a non-governmental organization with a unique global membership that brings together more than 200 international scientific unions and associations, as well as national and regional scientific organizations, including academies and research councils.

  • The Future Earth is a global team of scientists whose mission is to underpin the development of science-based targets for systems such as land, water, and biodiversity. Such targets will be able to contribute to re-stabilizing Earth’s natural systems and work towards ensuring a planet where humans can thrive.
