The following document outlines the Net Metering program:
Getting Started
Do Your Research
Understand the different generation options and which one is best for your location. Net Metering Program established through GVEA tariff and governed by Alaska Code 3 AAC 50.900 – 949.
Design Your System
This is the responsibility of the member. Many members find hiring a contractor and/or an installer extremely helpful to ensure all requirements of the NEC are met. We also highly recommend that you reach out or send your application portion first to GVEA to verify the generation size and equipment.
Submit Your GVEA Net Metering Application
Ensure that all elements of the application are completed. Missing or incorrect information may cause a delay in the processing of your application.
GVEA Processes Your Application
This process can take weeks, depending on the current workload. Processing time is faster if your application is complete and we have few follow-up questions. The only components of your system that GVEA will review are those that link to our system. This is not a review or verification of your system design or performance.
GVEA Performs Site Inspection
This site inspection is performed to ensure that the actual construction matches the submitted application and meets GVEA’s system requirements.
Final Steps
Once the site inspection is completed, the paperwork is sent to our Billing Department. Depending on your billing cycle, your net metering data should appear on your next one to two bills.
GVEA’s Net Metering Program – How it Works
Your produced kWh is simply subtracted from the kWh you use, and you may be billed or credited, based on these three scenarios:
- If you use exactly the same amount of electricity that you produce, you would owe only the Customer Charge.
- If you produce more electricity than you use, you make the Net Metering overproduction rate on any extra kWh that you produce.
- This is used to pay toward the Customer Charge and if there is a surplus, it is placed on your account as a credit!
- If you use more electricity than you produce, you pay the standard rate on any extra kWh that you use, plus the Customer Charge.
Application Packet
Please NOTE: Effective November 1, 2025, a Net Metering Application fee of $65 will apply to all new Net Metering Applications.
