Northern Arizona Astronomy: Earth’s Axis of Rotation

Our Sun with its planets formed together about 4.6 billion years ago, from a vast cloud of gas and dust. A passing shock wave, possibly from a nearby supernova, may have initially caused the material to first squeeze together followed by gravity then pulling everything inward. This mixing motion made it slowly spin, and as it condensed, it flattened out into a giant spinning disk with the Sun forming in the center, and the planets forming within the thin disk orbiting around it. Each of the planets originally would then have rotated on their axes due to the conservation of angular momentum inherited from the spinning cloud of gas and dust. One would also expect each planet’s initial axial tilt relative to its plane of orbit (obliquity) to be close to zero degrees, also due to the conservation of angular momentum.
