Fifteen years ago, we set out to work differently. To treat places not as brands or products, but as living communities with stories worth understanding and shaping. Since then, TOPOSOPHY has grown across continents, projects, and teams - and the belief behind it all has remained the same: places exist for the people who live in them, shape them, and keep them alive.

We started with one belief: places deserve better. Not quick campaigns or one-off fixes, but long-term thinking rooted in people and culture. When we launched About Tourism Destination Consultants in 2010, we weren’t following the industry. We were responding to what it lacked - depth, care, and honesty. That belief shaped everything that came after.

Athens changed us. With This Is Athens, we helped the city see itself in a new light. It wasn’t just a city brand, a DMO, or a series of destination events and products - it became a platform for Athenians to view their city differently and for visitors to rediscover it. It shifted how the city spoke about itself and how the world listened. That work set the foundations for how we approach every destination.

Across 250+ projects in 40 countries, we learned the same lesson repeatedly: no two places want the same thing, and no strategy works without local truth. From the UK to Mexico, Finland to Greece, we listened first, adapted quickly, and built solutions that belonged to the people who lived there.

We never saw ourselves as a firm that simply delivers projects. We became long-term partners, contributors, or founding members of global associations and organisations. We authored policies, strategies, books and reports on the future of tourism, the future of DMOs, and the evolution of the sector we help shape. We led debates on the sharing economy, sustainability, crisis management, and the role of DMOs. Our role grew from practitioners to contributors to the field’s direction.

Every major shift in our journey was born from challenge - scaling our team, rethinking our model, and navigating a pandemic that reshaped our industry. Rebranding as TOPOSOPHY in 2015 was not a design exercise; it marked a move toward something broader, stronger, and more enduring.

As we expanded into events, we focused on experiences with purpose. Dine Athens, Taste Festivals, and others became part of the city’s cultural rhythm. They were meeting points - places where people gathered, shared food, and felt connected to their city. They also boosted the local economy, strengthened the city’s brand, embraced new trends, and kept sustainability at the core.

Our collaborations with the European Travel Commission, HOTREC, CityDNA, UNWTO, UNDP, USAID, Mastercard, IMG and others worked because they were built on trust and shared goals. These relationships shaped policies, supported communities, and helped destinations grow with intention - not just through marketing spend or reports.

Growth was never only about headcount or project volume. It was about building a culture. A UK entity, a flagship Athens office, and a wider European footprint all played a part - but the centre has always been fairness, honesty, responsibility, and care.
