The number of Saimaa ringed seals in Finland is continuing to grow, according to Metsähallitus.
The population estimate for the rare mammals this year stands at 530 individuals, according to the natural resource management enterprise.
In 2024, the seal population was estimated at 495 individuals. Saimaa ringed seals are among the most endangered seals in the world.
The population estimates are based on the number of individuals observed during the month of January, a count which does not include pups born in the spring.
In a press release, Metsähallitus noted that the figures are based on population counts in nests and other monitoring of the animals.
It said that Saimaa ringed seal populations continue to grow rapidly in the Puruvesi and Suur-Saimaa lakes in Eastern Finland.
However, the situation in the northern part of Lake Saimaa is concerning, according to Metsähallitus.
