Ths affects Ft_Stewart and other East Coast Bases!

All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time.

Type your cut contents here.

Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food

Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both

Flashlight and extra batteries

First aid kit

Whistle to signal for help

Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place

Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)

Local maps

Additional Items to Consider Adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:

Prescription medications and glasses

Infant formula and diapers

Pet food and extra water for your pet

Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container. You can use the EFFAK (Emergency Financial First Aid Kit) developed by Operation Hope, FEMA and Citizen Corps to help you organize your information)

Cash or traveler's checks and change

Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov

Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.

Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.

Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper - When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

Fire Extinguisher

Matches in a waterproof container - Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items

Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels

Paper and pencil

Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

</div>

I HOPE EVERYONE STAYS SAFE THIS WEEK AND NO NATIONAL EMERGENCIES FOR DEPLOYMENTS!

Pictures

Since we're all posting pictures, I thought I'd offer up some advice. I'm not picking on anyone, I'm just trying to be helpful. It takes awhile to get used to lj codes.

Remove the ** to get the codes to work.

To lj cut: <**lj-cut**> Your text, images here <**/lj-cut>
To post images: <**img src="your url here"**>

You can host images for free at www.photobucket.com. Something to consider is that often times, pictures load up really really huge when you initially get them on photobucket. You can fix this by clicking on the *edit* button above the image, then resizing it. Always check to see how large your image is before you resize it, sometimes you'll need to resize by 50%, sometimes only by 75%. Huuuuge pictures don't look as nice, but keep in mind that once it's resized smaller, you can't make it large again on the photobucket site. You'll have to reload the image to get it back at it's original size. Also, you post an image from photobucket to lj by cutting and pasting the information in the box marked 'tag'

If you're posting images of your honey in uniform, it's a good idea take the time to blur out his name. You can use the paint progam to blur name tags and such. Why blur the nametag? Well, I don't know if the terrorists are reading lj, but I do know there are a lot of jerks online. Don't give out your last name. This is actually a rule in some communities, an OPSEC thing, and I know I've seen people who've been asked to remove the names from pictures. Really, it's just common sense.

It's considered good livejournal manners to use lj cuts for images and for large posts. Why? Because there are people on dialup, or people with limited bandwith. It slows down their computers. Also, if I post a really big image, it messes up the layout of the community as well as everyone's friendslists by streatching them out. It's not the end of the world, but it *is* annoying. Some people don't care if you use cuts or not, just like some people don't care if you credit them for using their icons... but some people get rather upset. When in doubt, put it behind a cut.

Ta da. Posted behind a cut, resized from original and name blurred. Easy as pie.

So much to do. So much to do. I have to make an appointment at the TMC. To get a Physical. Has anyone had one before? I have to have one before I go over seas. I dont know what to expect, Im sure its nothing bad. Just wondering. I have to fill out a whole bunch of paper work, and all call my doctors to get my immunizations and records. It doesn't sound hard, but it is when people dont really cooperate like you wish they would.

I have the army ball tomorrow, and I decided to wear the black dress since i already have the accessories and the shoes to go with it, because with the white dress i still have to buy the accessories and i dont have the money, and this way i can return the shoes and get like 35 dollars back. Thank you all for your opinions! I guess thats what happens when the military messes up the BH for the month. Thats my update! see ya guys, hope everyone is doin well.

more pics in my own journal...

i just wanted to show you all one of the pics i just got back from the photographer. my family in louisiana picked this and put it in the paper without running it by me - it's not what i would have picked - he's got a really goofy grin on his face, but it's still a great pic...

hopefully the fact that the paper will run it in black and white will hide the fact that omfg i have a farmer's tan!

so yeah i'm in cali - fallbrook and staying with kelly. our license is still in louisiana...as in the minister messed it up, the clerk's office sent it back and the minister is out of town so it will be another week before i can get my forms filled out. *sigh* but at least i'm here with chris and good friends to keep me sane. i can't go anywhere bc the quickest way to get somewhere requires going thru the naval weapons gate and yeah i have no sticker or id so that won't happen. oh well. we're married and i'm here with him - that's what counts.

they want us to do a home of record move buuuuuuuuut we'd have the weight limit he was allowed when he fist moved to pendleton...as an unmarried lcpl....woohoo. this should be interesting.

hope you're all doing well - and thanks so much again for all your help ladies!

PRESIDIO MILITARY HOUSING. CHECK OUT THE FLOOR PLANS. NO WAITING LIST!!!!

Official orders have been given-we have to arrive prior to October 3rd, 2005. Which is a major shock because were were thinking we'd PCS in April 06 like we were supposed to. But, since it's a school-we have to arrive before October I guess. I'm so excited. At first I was apprehensive but then I calmed down when I looked at the schools in the area and saw the housing! If I could-I'd get on the plane and go right now!
We're gonna road trip it and instead of flying, we'll drive from Elmendorf, AK TO Monterey/Presidio, CA. That's gonna be a long ass trip.

instead of replying to each comment, i thought i'd just answer them all this way(a lot easier!).
i talked to my hubby and told him i don't want to drive and he is not budging from his opinion...
i also thought i should clear up that there is no way i won't be able to get out of NOT going to iowa to see his parents. chris has always gone on every leave to see his parents, and this one he definitely would not miss. yeah, isn't that sad? not once have we gone on a vacation by ourselves...always to see mom and dad...grr.
i guess that is another big factor in this whole disagreement. i don't really think we should spend time over there...but so far our marriage has been me, him, and his parents. they absolutely hate me, and try so hard to break us up all the time too.
don't get me wrong, my husband is absolutely wonderful in every other way, the only problem he has is letting go of his dad.
but i guess this problem with us traveling on his leave will need to get worked out over the course of the next month or two.
thanks to everyone for their support and advice. you guys are truly great, i'm so glad i joined this community.

I love my nice, spankin-new-paint-job, shiny red Eclipse. I just paid about $800 to get it painted, about a month ago. It lead to a whole fiasco (no one EVER get your car painted at Maaco, at least not the one down here), but that's a story for a different place.

It got hit tonight while I was at work at Walmart. I walked out with Joe (my buddy/CSM) and Kelly (another buddy) and saw the light reflecting really weird off the passenger side. Walk over, and sure enough, nice big ole dent and scratches. I went inside, and the O/N manager doesn't know how to work the parking lot tapes, so I have to wait for LP to come in in the morning.

So, Doug (mr mgr) tells me to call FHP and get them to come do a report. I do, at 1130p. They finally show around 1215, and they look at my car, do a report and tell me that after we look at the tapes and see who it is, to confront them but not mention the tapes. If they fess up and pay for it, he won't take them to jail, but if they deny it, they're going.

Since we have to park soooooo far out, it almost had to be an associate that hit my car. No one else parks out there. And I always park in that same spot. And there's always the same couple of cars that park around me. And today, I parked in my spot, and no one was around me.

I hope it is an associate, so they have to see me all the time. I can't wait to watch the tapes tomorrow.

But, I did want to mention this, cos it made me smile:

Me: and he saw my dixie cup on the dashboard and asked who it belonged to
Jenna: And?
Me: oh, I said "my boyfriend" and he just smiled
Me: his partner kinda made a comment to him about how I'm working at walmart, paying rent and the car and insurance, and my boyfriend can't live near here since there's no base.
Jenna: In other words, a saint.
Me: i dunno what he meant by it, but it made me smile
Jenna: He meant that you go through a lot and you deserve respect. :)
Me: it made me smile
Me: no one else ever notices stuff like that

i don't know what to do...my husband, chris will be coming home on leave in a couple of months. he wants to visit his parents in IA, but i am in PA. he thinks i should drive all the way out there by myself with our one year old son...what do you guys think? should i try and convince him to fly into PA so we could drive out there together, or should i drive myself out there and risk getting lost or possibly kidnapped(i worry a lot)?
he also wanted to pick up a new car out there too and drive it back to PA with me...sorta test drive it i guess.
it seems kind of dumb for me to drive out there all by myself, leave my car at his parents, drive the new car to PA with him, then drive back to IA with him, and finally have me drive all the back to PA by myself again.
i was thinking of flying, but that's too expensive(i am also afraid of planes), and we need a car just in case he can't find his new one so we can get away(we definitely don't want to spend all of his leave at his dad's).
ugh!!!!!
what also makes it rough is that he has to fly back to iraq from his arrival city.
too frustrating. it doesn't help that he's being stubborn about this either.

NEW ORDERS

Finally...we have been waiting since the day he got back from cruise in July for Christian to get to school so he get his new orders...and wouldn't you know we end up in hampton roads again...damnit. No offense to anyone from here it's okay but we were born and raised in the same town in california our whole lives and both our families are there so you can imagine all we wanted were orders to out there. But of course the navy managed to stick him in this star 21 program which send everyone at the school to east coast and overseas order...damn oh well only 2 more years. He did at least get to pick the squadron he wanted...VFA 106 he would have liked to go back to his squadron VF-143 but they stop taking people because they are getting ready to get rid of the tomcats and get their new hornets. And another plus is since i just graduated there are tons of jobs here for my degree!! But now we are going to plan a wedding in california from Virginia that should be fun...lol. At least we know now we were tired of playing the guessing game!

Question to the mods

Could we possibly start requiring photos to be placed behind lj-cuts? If this is already a rule can you put it on the infopage?
It really hampers those of us with slower connections when we have to wait for a half dozen pictures of someone's wardrobe to load.
One small photo is ok, but lots of them really bog stuff down (not to mention fill up a flist, for those of you with faster connections).
Thanks!

CHILD CARE - FREE TO NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVE SOLDIERS
From the October '04 issue of Soldiers magazine

THE National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies has launched Operation Child Care. The program offers free care for the children of National Guard and Reserve Soldiers returning for two weeks of rest-and-recuperation leave from Iraq and Afghanistan. Child-care providers who meet state and local child-care regulations will provide four or more hours of free child care, so that Soldiers can attend to family business or take their spouses out on dates. Operation Child Care was designed FREE TO NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVE SOLDIERS for Guard and Reserve Soldiers because they don’t typically have access to the military family support programs available to active-duty personnel. Guard and Reserve Soldiers with leave orders can access Operation Child Care services by calling NACCRRA’s national Child Care Aware hotline at (800) 424-2246, or by visiting its Web site. Soldiers will be connected to their local child care resource and referral agency, then linked to participating child-care providers.

Visit the Web site at www.ChildCareAware.org.

= xp'd =

The average age of the military wife\girlfriend is 20 years old.She isn't old enough to buy a beer, but is old enough to manage a whole household on her own and maybe she has a kid or two. She probably never saw herself loving a man who was in the military, but she loves him regardless. Her penmanship has improved over the last few months, due to the excessive letter writing she has been doing. She cries alot, because she misses the man she swore to love. Her life isn't complete without him.She looks very tired, because of her many nights without sleep, due to a late night phone call that never came or a call that came and kept her up all night, just because she heard his voice, she is too overjoyed to sleep. As a wife, she is classified as a dependent, but she is totally independent. She tends to her household, her kids, her school work, and her job, all without her husband. She manages to wear a smile, even though inside shes crying. She understands that the man she loves has to go far away. She understand that he can be taken away from her in a moments notice. She feels a great sense of pride and probably cries whenever she hears the National Anthem, sees a flag blowing in the breeze, or watches the news and hears about another death in Iraq, she worries that it might be him. She goes weeks without a call or a letter, but she writes him whenever she gets a free moment. She knows how to convert civilian time into military time. She knows how to iron his clothes and how to get the creases just right. Before he left she used to complain if she didn't see him for a day or two, but now she gets annoyed when she hears someone complaining about not seeing their boyfriends. She may not have see him for months but she remembers everything about him, every scar he has, the way he smells, whether or not he snores. She has every picture of him and them out and in frames, she stares at them for hours on end, she has read every letter at least 40 times. Even though her man is a half a world away, she still manages to go on with her life, as he would want her to. You may not know what she looks like, but as soon as you see her in the store you'll know that her husband it a world away without even having to speak to her. Shes the one who's half frowning half smiling, she has at least one Support out Troops pen that she wears and one thats on her car. Half her wardrobe is based on his military branch. She owns lots of stuff that has his branch on it. She never knew that could love the color camouflage green, tan, navy blue, red or black so much. Next time you see her, you'll know her, thank her for what the man she loves is doing. She will greatly appreciate it and she will smile and thank you, and just because you thanked her she smile the rest of the day!
