    繼承自中古英語 dogge[1]（與低地蘇格蘭語 dug同源），繼承自古英語 dogga、docga[2][3]，來源不確定。[4]

    最初的意思似乎是指普通的狗，與純種狗相對，或是類似「雜種狗」（cur）的意思，後來可能用來指粗壯的狗。可能是一個帶有後綴-ga（比較frocga (“青蛙”)、*picga (“豬”)）的寵物名指小詞，附加在來源和含義不明的詞根*dog-、*doc-上。一種可能是源自古英語 dox (“黑色的，黝黑的”)（比較源自frox的frocga）。[5] 另一種說法是它派生自原始西日耳曼語 *dugan (“適合”)，這是古英語 dugan (“好，有價值，有用”)、英語 dow、荷蘭語 deugen、德語 taugen的詞源。該理論認為，它可能是兒童常用的狗的稱呼，意思是「好／有用的動物」。[6] 還有一種說法是它與*docce (“軀幹，肌肉”)有關，源自原始西日耳曼語 *dokkā (“圓塊，球，肌肉，娃娃”)，派生出英語 dock (“粗短的尾巴”)。

    在14世紀的英格蘭，hound（源自古英語 hund）是所有家養犬科動物的通用詞，而 dog 則指的是一種類似現代獒犬和鬥牛犬的亞種。[7] 到了16世紀，dog 已經成為通用詞，而 hound 開始僅指用於打獵的品種。[8] 在16世紀，dog 一詞被幾種歐洲大陸語言借用，作為表示mastiff (“獒犬”)的詞語。[9]

    儘管在形式和含義上相似，但它與姆巴巴拉姆語 dog無關。
