難病・難治性疾患・病名診断が困難な病気などは、日 本語では「難病」とよばれる。しかし、その英訳は、考える限りでは、incurable disease, intractable disease などでしかない。
日本語の難病そのものが、多義的な （polysemic）な意味を負わされているからである。
■難病の英訳について
〈不治の〉 an incurable disease

■厚労省が、一般向けに紹介した難病は？
「治療がむずかしく、慢性の経過をたどる疾病もいま だ存在し、このような疾病を難病と呼んでいます」。
■難病概念の歴史的・社会的相対概念
「「難病」は、医学的に明確に定義された病気の名称 ではありません。いわゆる「不治の病」に対して社会通念として用いられてきた言葉です。そのため、難病であるか否かは、その時代の医療水準や社会事情に よって変化します」（難病情報センターの情報と同じ：http://www.nanbyou.or.jp/entry/1360）
■国による「難病対策要綱」
