具体的な差別語を使わないで、差別語を定義しましょう――あるいは定義の試みをしてみましょう。

ま ず、ここでの差別の定義とは、特定のグループ、階級、あるいはたの帰属カテゴリーに対して不正義でいわれない区別をつける行為のことである。とりわけ、両 者の間に圧倒的な権力的格差があり、それとは全く無関係な屁理屈を行使したりすること。現実に、社会的な差別という事実があり、そして、その差別を肯定 するような、被差別者へのレッテルを、差別用語というのでしょう。

"Discrimination is the act of making unjustified distinctions between human beings based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they are perceived to belong. People may be discriminated on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation, as well as other categories. Discrimination especially occurs when individuals or groups are unfairly treated in a way which is worse than other people are treated, on the basis of their actual or perceived membership in certain groups or social categories. It involves restricting members of one group from opportunities or privileges that are available to members of another group." - Discrimination

外国人差別、被差別部落差別、アイヌ差別、沖縄人差別、ジェンダー差別、クイア差別、肌の色にもとづく差別、など、それに先行している「現象」 に呼応するから差別語というのです。ただし、憲法における男女の平等があっても、ジェンダーによる差別がありますよね。だから、男女差別などないのだと言 う人も、（それに対する社会的事実があれば）、やはり非対称な女性を指示する呼称は差別語になるわけです。
