Cultural nationalism is a term used by scholars of nationalism to describe efforts among intellectuals to promote the formation of national communities through emphasis on a common culture. It is contrasted with "political" nationalism, which refers to specific movements for national self-determination through the establishment of a nation-state.[1][2][3]

Definition

John Hutchinson's 1987 work The Dynamics of Cultural Nationalism argued against earlier scholarship that tended to conflate nationalism and state-seeking movements.[4] Hutchinson developed a typography distinguishing cultural from political nationalists, describing how the former act as moral innovators, emerging at times of crisis, to engender movements that offer new maps of identity based on historical myths that - in turn - may inspire programmes of socio-political regeneration from the latter. He emphasises the dynamic role of historians and artists, showing how they interact with religious reformists and a discontented modernising intelligentsia to form national identities.

In his later work, Hutchinson admits his earlier distinction may be too simplistic[5] and recognises:

It is often hard in practice to separate cultural and political nationalisms. Cultural nationalists often engage in political, even insurrectionary activities, and nationalists whose goal is for political independence may justify their claims by arguments that their nation has an ancient distinctive culture that is threatened by foreign rule.
— John Hutchinson, Cultural Nationalism, p.75

What distinguishes these cultural "revivals" from earlier ones is their political dynamism, arising from the "coming together of neo-classical and pre-romantic European intellectual currents".[6] These cultural nationalist movements aimed at cultural homogenisation and utilised the study of history as a resource for social innovation. Intellectuals aim to "present populations with new maps of identity and political prescriptions that claim to combine the virtues of historical tradition and modern progress at times of crisis".[7]

History

Anthony D. Smith describes how intellectuals played a primary role in generating cultural perceptions of nationalism:

Wherever one turns in Europe, their seminal position in generating and analysing the concepts, myths, symbols and ideology of nationalism is apparent. This applies to the first appearance of the core doctrine and to the antecedent concepts of national character, genius of the nation and national will.[8]

Smith posits the challenges posed to traditional religion and society in the Age of Revolution propelled many intellectuals to "discover alternative principles and concepts, and a new mythology and symbolism, to legitimate and ground human thought and action".[9] The simultaneous concept of 'historicism' was characterised by an emerging belief in the birth, growth, and decay of specific peoples and cultures, which became "increasingly attractive as a framework for inquiry into the past and present and [...] an explanatory principle in elucidating the meaning of events, past and present".[10]

Johann Gottfried Herder and Johann Gottlieb Fichte are considered key figures who argued for such a cultural definition of nationhood. They emphasised the distinctness of national cultures based predominantly around language, stressing its character as "the epitome of people’s unique historical memories and traditions and the central source of the national spirit".[11]

Miroslav Hroch argues cultural nationalism laid the foundation for the emergence political nationalism.[12]

For Yael Tamir, the right to national self-determination represents the embodiment of the "unique cultural essence of cultural groups" and their right to develop cultural distinctiveness, irrespective of whether these groups seek an independent nation-state.[13]

Criticism

Some scholars, such as Craig Calhoun and Eric Hobsbawm, among others, criticize cultural definitions of nationhood for neglecting the role of the state in the formation of national identities and the role played by socio-political elites in constructing cultural identities. Similarly, Paul Brass argues national identities are not given but rather the product of the politics of socio-political elites.[14]

Umut Ozkirimli rejects a sharp distinction between cultural and political nationalism, emphasising that nationalism is about both. He states it simultaneously involves "the ‘culturalization’ of politics and the ‘politicisation’ of culture".[15]

In China, the word minzu (Chinese: 民族; pinyin: mínzú) means a community that inherits culture (文化) or consanguinity (血缘). Depending on the context, the word has various meanings, such as "nation", "race" and "ethnic group". In modern Chinese languages, minzu has a stronger cultural meaning than racial meaning.

Minzu-based nationalism is associated with nationalism in Northeast Asia and Vietnam, usually in the form of cultural or ethnic nationalism, in contrast to state nationalism.[1] Minzu-based nationalism in China and Taiwan is close to multi-ethnic nationalism.[2]

Etymology

Look up 民族 in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.
In Chinese, the term minzu has several meanings; it can be confused with concepts such as "zhǒngzú" (种族, lit. "race"), "guózú" (国族, lit. "nation"), "zúqún" (族群, lit. "ethnic group"). For example, 民族主义 (pinyin: mínzú zhǔyì, lit. "minzu-ism") means "nationalism", but 民族学 (pinyin: mínzú xué, lit. "minzu-study") means "ethnology".

The term "minzu" is found in Xiao Zixian's book 《南齐书·高逸传》 during the Liang dynasty ("今诸华士女, 民族弗革"), and in the book 《太白阴经》 during the Tang dynasty ("愚人得之, 以倾宗社, 灭民族"). However, these terms are closer to the meaning of "people" (民众) than they are to today.[3][4]

Minzu is a loanword from Japanese.[5]: 109  During the Meji period, Japanese translators rendered "nation", "ethnic group", and "Volk" into minzoku (Japanese: 民族) when translating European books, which was introduced to China.[6]

Zhonghua minzu

Main article: Zhonghua minzu
Before the 1911 Revolution, the members of the Chinese Revolutionary Party were hostile to the Qing dynasty ("Anti-Qing sentiment") and tried to build a nation-state around the Han Chinese; at this time the concept of Zhonghua minzu (中华民族 / 中華民族, zhōnghuá mínzú, lit. "Chinese nation") was about the same meaning with Han minzu (汉民族 / 漢民族, hàn mínzú, lit. "Han nation") or Hanzu (汉族 / 漢族, hànzú, "Han ethnic group").

After the 1911 Revolution, the concept of "Five Races Under One Union" was introduced, and later Zhonghua minzu united various ethnic groups in China. Today, Zhonghua minzu is concept is related to multi-ethnic nationalism, and therefore distinct from Han minzu or Hanzu.

Other countries

民族 is not a word spoken only in China and Japan, and can be used in countries throughout Chinese cultural sphere where Chinese characters are spoken. The "dân tộc" in the Vietnamese language, and "민족" in the Korean language are 民族 and lexical cognates.

In the modern Japanese language, minzoku (民族) is mainly used to express "ethnic group", instead "nation" is translated into kokumin (国民).

National symbolism
In many Northeast Asian countries, 民族 is often related to official national symbol as well.

The word appears in People's Republic of China's official national anthem ("March of the Volunteers"), Military Anthem of the People's Liberation Army, and the National Flag Anthem of the Republic of China (Taiwan). In South Korea, the word was used in the Pledge of Allegiance until 2007.

National liberation movements

See also: Anti-imperialism, National liberation (Marxism), and stateless nation
民族, 国民, and 国族 all mean "nation". Among them, 民族 is often used to describe anti-imperialist left-wing nationalism centered on ethnic identity, especially stateless nationalism; 国民 or 国族, means "nation", which can be established only on the premise of 'state' (国/國), so in Northeast Asia, when it comes to words like "national self-determination" (民族自決, mínzú zìjué) and "national liberation" (民族解放, mínzú jiěfàng), the word "nation[nal]" translates to the 民族, not the 国民 or 国族. Because of this, in Northeast Asia, 'minzu-based nationalism' (民族主義) and 'state-based nationalism' (国族主義, 国民主義 or 国家主義) are applied in different contexts.

From the 1930s to 1945, the Japanese imperialists proclaimed the idea of "national liberation" (民族自決, minzu jiefang) and "national self-determination" (民族解放, minzu zijue) to encourage the separation of Northeast China and North China from the rest of the country. This is also related to local ethnic nationalism; minzu may mean "nation" but may also mean "ethnic group".[7]

In Postwar Japan, liberal nationalists like Masao Maruyama emphasized "国民主義" (kokumin shugi, lit. "state-based nationalism" or "civic nationalism"[8]) while left-wing nationalists who supported Marxism and anti-imperialism emphasized "民族主義" (minzoku shugi, lit. "ethnic nationalism").[9]

Today, in South Korea, left-liberals tend to value minjok (the Korean race) over the North–South ideological and political divide. In a broader sense, left-liberals embrace "ethnic nationalism" (民族主義, Korean: 민족주의); the notion that sharing the same bloodline is superior to temporary national partition. Conservatives on the other hand support "regime-based nationalism" (國民主義 or 國家主義, Korean: 국민주의 or 국가주의), which puts emphasis on being South Korean and stresses the differences in social and political values between the two Koreas.[10][11]

In South Vietnam, which existed in the past, the anti-communist nationalist Vietnamese Nationalist Party defined "nation" as quốc dân (國民). In contrast, the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, a dissident communist nationalist guerrilla in South Vietnam, defined "nation" as dân tộc (民族).

Hong Kong nationalists reject the concept of "Chinese minzu" (中華民族) and define themselves as "HongKonger minzu" (香港民族). "Hong Kong [ethnic] nationalism" (民族主義 or 香港民族主義) is often opposed to Chinese state nationalism (國家主義 or 中國國家主義),[12] because many Chinese state nationalists support reducing Hong Kong's autonomy.[13] During Taiwan's KMT one-party dictatorship, the Kuomintang (KMT) defended Chinese state nationalism, in opposition to which liberal/progressives, including the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), defended Taiwanese-based "liberal [ethnic] nationalism" (自由民族主義); moderate Taiwanese [ethnic] nationalism has an impact on Taiwanese politics even after democratization.[14]

Racial pride

Some Northeast Asia's nationalists value the 'blood purity' when defining 民族, showing racial nationalism.[15] Yamato nationalism during Empire of Japan, and today's North Korea's Juche are linked to racial nationalism.[16]

According to some scholars, Northeast Asia's "nationalism" (民族主義) has right Hegelians and 19th century notions of blood and soil.[17]

Three Principles of the People
Main article: Three Principles of the People § Mínzú or Nationalism
"Mínzú" (民族, nationalism) is a core principle of the Three Principles of the People, along with "Mínquán" (民權, democracy) and "Mínshēng" (民生, socialism).

National character refers to a characteristic common personality of the people of a nation.[1][2] National character has been studied within the fields of anthropology, sociology, and psychology.[3] The question of whether analysis and descriptions of national characters express meaningful content, as opposed to comprising inaccurate stereotypes, is controversial.[4][5] Most of the research on national character has focused on the content, stability, accuracy, and origins of national character stereotypes.[2] A 1985 cross-national study of national character found fundamental differences between the psychological profiles of the respective national populations of France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, and the United States.[2] Some studies comparing national character stereotypes with assessed personality traits find a moderate relationship between stereotype and reality, while others have found perceptions of national character to be unfounded and poorly related.[2][6] Academic interest in national character peaked around World War II, with two anthropologists in 1969 identifying 1935 to 1945 as the field's seminal period, and declined in the decades that followed due to changes in academic thought.[7] Jerome Braun wrote in 2014 that "the study of national character nowadays is considered somewhat old-fashioned because the most famous period devoted to this study, the period immediately after World War II, eventually reached a point of exhaustion, intellectual and otherwise, as studies were attacked for superfic and bias on the part of the researchers."[8]

(Völkertafel.jpg)

(Offenherzig)
(Witzig)
(Trunk)
(Löben)
(Im Wasser)

Imagology is a branch of comparative literature. More specifically, it is concerned with "the study of cross-national perceptions and images as expressed in literary discourse".[1] While it adopts a constructivist perspective on national stereotypes and national character, it does emphasize that these stereotypes may have real social effects. It was developed in the 1950s with practitioners in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.[2][3] It never gained much of a foothold in anglophone academia. This may be attributed to imagology's skewed relationship[clarification needed] to Edward Said's influential Orientalism, which is much better known in this context.[3]

History
National stereotypes were long seen as intrinsic properties of ethnic groups. Hippolyte Taine is a major representative of this positivist view.[4] In his Histoire de la littérature anglaise (1863) he held that cultural artefacts are determined by three factors: "moment", "milieu" and "race".[5] The voluntarist view of what it means to belong to a nation was expressed by Ernest Renan in his lecture "Qu'est-ce qu'une nation?" (What is a nation?) in 1882.[6] Renan argues that citizens may choose to affiliate themselves to a particular nation. Joep Leerssen terms this view proto-imagological, because national identity was still held to be an independently existing entity.[4]

Imagology as the study of literary representations of national or characteristic stereotypes[7] emerged from the French school of comparative literature.[8] The scholars who founded the Revue de la littérature comparée in 1921 (Paul van Tieghem, Fernand Baldensperger, Paul Hazard) had an historical interest in literature and wanted to go beyond the study of national images as if they were historical facts.[8] Marius-François Guyard dedicated a whole chapter to the subject: "L'étranger tel qu'on le voit" ("The outsider as he is viewed"), in his book La Litterature comparée (1951),[9] which analyses novels that represent nations other than the authors' own. As the title already suggests, Guyard did not assume that these images reflected national essences, but rather treated them as representations. This shift from essences to representations makes Guyard a founding father of imagology, which is premised on the assumption that "the images which one studies are seen as properties of texts, as the intellectual produce of a discourse".[8] René Wellek, a leading figure in US comparative literature, contested Guyard's inclusion of imagology in the study of comparative literature, arguing that the study of cross-national images should not become part of comparative literature, for this would turn it into an auxiliary discipline to International relations. A rift between the American and French schools of comparative literature ensued, which limited the international action-radius of imagology.[10]

Theoretical assumptions
Imagologists call the representation of national stereotypes "ethnotypes". Those ethnotypes are regarded as discursive objects rather than objectively existing phenomena. They are always defined against an "other", generating an opposition between auto-images and hetero-images.[11] An auto-image is the representation of the self, while a hetero-image is the representation of the other. These representations stress difference, in keeping with the assumption that "a nation is most characteristically itself in precisely those aspects in which it is most different from others".[12] In ethnotyping, national character serves as an explanatory factor for the behaviour of the actors in literary representations.[11] Oppositional patterns such as North-South, East-West or Centre-Periphery with their concomitant stereotypes serve to contrast nations, regions or continents to each other. In this multi-scalar logic, the same location can be the Centre to one Other and the Periphery to another Other.[11] These representations are changing over time, depending on multiple factors, such as the political and social climate and literary trends.[11]
Method
Since imagology studies literary representations and not societies as such, it is a methodology for the humanities, not for social sciences. Following the theoretical assumption that ethnotypes are not measurable against an objective reality, the research focus is not on the truth-value of a representation but rather on its representation-value.[4] Concretely, this means that imagological research can never raise the question of whether author A has correctly represented nation B, because national character for imagologists is non-existent outside of the literary construction. Rather, imagological research inquires into the development, construction or effects of auto-images, hetero-images or meta-images an author creates in his work. A meta-image is the image an author writing from nation A about nation B attributes to the view of nation B on nation A.[12] Furthermore, it is of interest to see how ethnotypes influenced each other in comparing nationalities, time periods or genres.[12]

Imagological analysis inquires the intertextual, contextual and textual aspects of ethnotypes.

The intertext of an ethnoytpe is established through researching literary representations of the same nation in the same time period.[12] The rationale is to investigate influences of the existing body of literary representations of a nation on the case under study. This can lead to the examination of whether a literary representation of a specific nation has changed over time. For instance, ethnotypes were traditionally often portrayed in sharply contrasting binary terms. In the late-19th century, authors increasingly used ambiguity and irony in their representations, to make them more nuanced. The contextual dimension targets the historical, social, political and economic background in which the text was written, since it is assumed that the author's immediate environment influences his/her representations.[12] War between two countries, for instance, will most probably impart negative connotations to their mutual ethnotypes, while nationalism tends to reinforce the political instrumentalization of auto-images. The textual dimension of imagological analysis examines the text as such, focusing on genre conventions and rhetorical strategies.[12]

National identity

National identity is a person's identity or sense of belonging to one or more states or one or more nations.[1][2] It is the sense of "a nation as a cohesive whole, as represented by distinctive traditions, culture, and language".[3]

National identity comprises both political and cultural elements.[4] As a collective phenomenon, it can arise from the presence of "common points" in people's daily lives: national symbols, language, the nation's history, national consciousness, and cultural artifacts.[5] Subjectively, it is a feeling one shares with a group of people about a nation, regardless of one's legal citizenship status.[6] In psychological terms, it is defined as an "awareness of difference", a "feeling and recognition of 'we' and 'they'".[7] National identity can incorporate the population, as well as diaspora, of multi-ethnic states and societies that have a shared sense of common identity. Hyphenated ethnicities are examples of the confluence of multiple ethnic and national identities within a single person or entity.

Under international law, the term national identity, concerning states, is interchangeable with the term state's identity or sovereign identity of the state. A State's identity by definition, is related to the Constitutional name of the state used as a legal identification in international relations and an essential element of the state's international juridical personality. The sovereign identity of the nation also represents a common denominator for identification of the national culture or cultural identity, and under International Law, any external interference with the cultural identity or cultural beliefs[8] and traditions appear to be inadmissible. Any deprivation or external modification of the cultural national identity violates basic collective human rights.[9]

The expression of one's national identity seen in a positive light is patriotism characterized by national pride and the positive emotion of love for one's country. The extreme expression of national identity is chauvinism, which refers to the firm belief in the country's superiority and extreme loyalty toward one's country.[1]
