What is Postliberalism ? with Why Liberalism Failed

Postliberalism is an emergent political philosophy that critiques and seeks to move beyond the dominant liberal paradigm of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Proponents argue that liberalism, with its emphasis on individual rights, free markets, and limited government, has failed to adequately address societal challenges such as economic inequality, environmental degradation, social alienation, family breakdown, and a perceived loss of community and social cohesion.

Postliberals advocate for a more communitarian approach that prioritizes the common good, social solidarity, and the cultivation of virtue, often drawing on traditional moral and religious frameworks. They tend to be skeptical of unconstrained individualism, instead seeing individuals as more tightly bound up in networks of obligations in families, communities, tribes and faiths, and argue for a greater role for the state in shaping culture and promoting shared values. Postliberal thinkers come from both the left and the right, and the movement is associated with a diverse range of ideas, including economic nationalism, localism, and a critique of liberal democracy itself.[1]

History

Postliberalism has adherents on both the political left and right.

It first developed in the United Kingdom out of a movement within the Labour Party called Blue Labour.[2][3] Early British theorists included John Gray, Maurice Glasman, Phillip Blond, Adrian Pabst, John Milbank, and Jon Cruddas.[3][4]

British postliberalism remains a broadly centre-left ideology which grew out of Christian Socialism, however in recent years some factions within the Conservative Party have adopted elements of postliberalism and National Conservatism.[5]

In the United States, postliberalism has been more influential among conservatives critical of the fusionist synthesis of free markets and traditional values which developed in the 1950s such as Patrick Deneen, Rod Dreher and Adrian Vermule, as well as the Israeli conservative philosopher Yoram Hazony.[6][7][8]

Ideology

Communitarianism

The postliberal critique contends that liberalism, in both its economic and cultural forms, undermines the social and communal bonds on which human flourishing depends. Central to postliberal thought is the idea that human beings are not purely autonomous individuals but are shaped by their social and cultural contexts. Postliberals argue that the liberal focus on individual rights and freedoms has undermined the importance of community, family, and tradition in providing a sense of meaning and belonging. They maintain that a healthy society requires a shared sense of purpose and a commitment to the common good, which liberalism has failed to provide.

Drawing on a reading of social contract theorists like Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, as well as J. S. Mill and John Rawls, postliberals argue liberalism promotes an atomized individualism at odds with human sociability.[9] Patrick Deneen claims that Liberalism, while claiming neutrality, influences people to approach commitments and relationships with flexibility, treating them as interchangeable and open to renegotiation, thereby encouraging loose connections.[10]

Some postliberal feminists such as Louise Perry, Nina Power, Christine Emba, and Mary Harrington argue that the sexual revolution of the 1960s gave rise to a set of sexual ethics and norms which prioritised individual autonomy, reproductive rights, and sexual libertinism, and that this has proved harmful to women.[3][11][12][13][14]

Pluralism

Postliberals also challenge the liberal conception of the state as a neutral arbiter between competing interests. They argue that the state should actively promote a particular vision of the good life, based on the values and traditions of the community it serves. This may involve measures to protect and promote traditional institutions such as the family, religion, and local associations, as well as a more restrictive approach to issues such as immigration and cultural diversity. “Postliberals reject the fiction of a purely neutral state, instead suggesting that the state should play an active role in promoting the common good and ensuring social cohesion.”[15]

Liberal philosophers such as John Rawls have characterised Liberalism as a political regime in which the state is (or should seek to be) neutral with regards to personal values and conceptions of the good life. Criticising this claim, Patrick Deneen argues that any society "ultimately can't be neutral on questions about what it is we value as society. If we're going to be a society in any sense, if we're going to be a kind of order in any sense, there are always going to be fundamental beliefs and fundamental commitments that are going to be predominant”.[16]

As an alternative, postliberals advocate a politics oriented towards the common good, seeking to balance individual rights with social responsibilities. Others focus on economic issues, critiquing the outcomes of liberal capitalism and proposing alternative models that are more regulated and socially embedded. Some postliberals also emphasize the importance of cultural traditions, national identity, and environmental conservation.

Free market

In the economic realm, postliberals criticize the liberal commitment to free markets, arguing that it has led to the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few, while leaving many people behind, fostering stratification between cosmopolitan elites and rooted working classes. They advocate for a more interventionist role for the state in managing the economy, including protectionist policies, and measures to reduce economic inequality, protect workers' rights, and promote the development of local communities.

English philosopher John Gray has argued that “the unfettered free market and globalisation undermined the very foundations of a modern open market economy”. Patrick Deneen similarly claims that,

The expansion of liberalism rests upon a vicious and reinforcing cycle in which state expansion secures the end of individual fragmentation, in turn requiring further state expansion to control a society without shared norms, practices, or beliefs. Liberalism thus increasingly requires a legal and administrative regime, driven by the imperative of replacing all nonliberal forms of support for human flourishing (such as schools, medicine and charity), and hollowing any deeply held sense of shared future or fate among the citizenry.[16]

International relations

Postliberal approaches to international relations and global politics have been most fully developed by John Milbank, Adrian Pabst, and Patrick J. Deneen.[3]

Postliberalism attributes the crisis in international relations to an intensifying liberalism that it argues undermines itself. Unlike John Ikenberry’s perspective, which posits that the liberal international order is threatened by illiberal forces and requires more liberalism to counteract this threat, postliberals perceive the rise of illiberal forces as a response to what they view as liberalism's inherent contradictions.[3] Pabst suggests that the emergence of populism and civilization states reflects a reaction against global politics that, in their view, neglects national and local concerns, idealizes utopian visions over real places, and emphasizes individual identity at the expense of shared belonging. They argue that liberalism, which no longer promotes a substantive good, becomes ambiguous, fostering individual freedoms while failing to manage the resulting forces both internationally and nationally.[9] According to this viewpoint, liberalism lacks an inherent, preordained purpose.

The United States-led liberal order established after World War II is seen by some scholars as mirroring the trajectory of domestic liberalism. Milbank and Pabst contend that US hegemony treats nation-states as large-scale liberal egos, grounded in American individualism and voluntarism, and disseminated through imperial means to achieve national goals. Since the 1970s, they argue, global governance has strengthened state power, expanded individual freedoms domestically, while diminishing local decision-making and distancing authority from national democratic forums. According to their analysis, "Enlightenment liberalism ironically threatens to turn war into an unlimited action against an enemy of civilization as such", which resonates with the ideas of German jurist Carl Schmitt.[3][9] They believe this expansionist liberal universalism has contributed to the rise of civilizational blocs.[3][9]

Criticism

Critics argue that specifying the content of the common good in presently pluralistic societies presents challenges. Liberal critics argue that more statist versions of postliberalism risk excessively curtailing individual liberty in their visions of using state power to enforce a substantive conception of the good, while other postliberals point to a more pluralistic understanding.[17]

Critics on the left have claimed that postliberalism endorses socially reactionary attitudes and that this is morally objectionable. One critic has claimed that “because of its alleged interest in the public good but its conservative (Republican) orientation, postliberalism is ultimately incoherent.”[18] Socialist critic J. J. Porter has accused postliberalism of ultimately undermining its own conditions of possibility: “it wants to preserve many of the fruits of liberalism while doing away with the structure from which they grow.”[19]

Critics on the free-market right have claimed that postliberalism’s embrace of economic planning and regulation and skepticism of the free market risks damaging economic growth.[20] Other conservative critics have argued that postliberalism undervalues the importance of individual freedom and the economic benefits of free market capitalism.[21]

Relation to other ideologies

Elements of postliberal political ideas have been integral to the development of Blue Labour and, more recently, National Conservatism and factions within the British Conservative Party.[22][23]

Many analysts have also identified the substantial influence of Catholic Social Teaching on postliberalism itself.[24][25]

Some scholars have noted the influence of American historian and cultural critic Christopher Lasch on postliberalism.[3][18]

Impact on politics

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán and his political party, Fidesz, has been considered by many to be postliberal or national conservative in character.[24][26] In a speech given by Orbán on 14 September 2023, he said “The postliberal era we look forward to, which will replace the current progressive-liberal era, will not come automatically. Someone has to make it happen. And who will make it happen, if not us?”[27]

In the United Kingdom, many members of the New Conservatives faction of the Conservative Party, such as Danny Kruger and Miriam Cates, have either self-identified with postliberalism or been considered by others to be aligned with it. On the British left, the Blue Labour tradition has featured a number of Members of Parliament or life peers in the House of Lords including Jon Cruddas and Lord Maurice Glasman, while postliberal writers Adrian Pabst and Sebastian Milbank has claimed that the leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, has shown some interest in policies advocated by Blue Labour thinkers.[28][29]

In the United States, a number of Republican politicians have been identified with postliberal and national conservative ideas, particularly Senators J. D. Vance, Josh Hawley, and Marco Rubio.[30][31][32]

Why Liberalism Failed , by Patrick Deneen.

Why Liberalism Failed is a 2018 book by Patrick Deneen, a professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame.[1][2] It criticizes both forms of American liberalism: "classical liberalism", typically called in America "libertarianism", and "progressive/modern liberalism", often called simply "liberalism".[2][3]
Synopsis
Why Liberalism Failed is a critique of political, social, and economic liberalism as practiced by both American Democrats and Republicans. According to Deneen, "we should rightly wonder whether America is not in the early days of its eternal life but rather approaching the end of the natural cycle of corruption and decay that limits the lifespan of all human creations."[1] The book argues that liberalism has exhausted itself, leading to income inequality, cultural decline, atomization, nihilism, the erosion of freedoms, and the growth of powerful, centralized bureaucracies.[4][5] The book also argues that liberalism has replaced old values of community, religion and tradition with self-interest.[5]
Reviews

Former US president Barack Obama wrote in 2018 that while he disagrees with many of the conclusions of the book, Why Liberalism Failed "offers cogent insights into the loss of meaning and community that many in the West feel, issues that liberal democracies ignore at their own peril."[6]

Jennifer Szalai for The New York Times wrote that it "speaks to a profound discontent with the political establishment" and that Deneen echoes the popular 2016 election sentiment that both parties were the same. She adds that the book attributes liberalism not only to one side but mostly to political elites' orthodoxy dating to 500 years ago. She describes the book as "a deeply exasperating volume that nevertheless articulates something important in this age of disillusionment." Deneen proposes a more traditional society in which "preferably religious communities tend to the land and look after their own," and is critical of women's liberation that pushed them into capitalism.[3]

In a review for The New York Review of Books, Robert Kuttner described the book as "convenient for conservatives looking to blame all ills on liberals" to oppose globalization and market fundamentalism and to perceive liberalism as "a dangerous betrayal of deeper sources of culture and civilization such as the family, the tribe, the nation, and the church," Kuttner also argued that Deneen engaged in "exaggerations, omissions, and misrepresentations of liberalism" and added that "the acclaim his book initially received is startling, even scandalous."[2]

In its review of the book, The Economist argued that Deneen "does an impressive job of capturing the current mood of disillusionment, echoing left-wing complaints about rampant commercialism, right-wing complaints about narcissistic and bullying students, and general worries about atomisation and selfishness" but criticized him for failing to actually convince that the only way to solve the problem is abandoning liberalism. The magazine concludes that "the best way to read Why Liberalism Failed is not as a funeral oration but as a call to action: up your game, or else."[7]

Writing in The Week, Damon Linker described it as "the most electrifying book of cultural criticism published in some time." He added that Deneen argues that liberalism failed because it succeeded. But Linker wrote that he did not find "especially persuasive" the claim made in the book that the Western liberal world was nearing its end.[4]

Park MacDougald wrote for New York that Deneen criticizes liberalism not because of its materialist failures but from a philosophical standpoint and for "what he sees as a liberal redefinition of the ancient and medieval concept of freedom, or libertas." "Liberalism's big innovation was to reject this classical understanding as unrealistic, unscientific, and oppressive," writes MacDougald. He concludes that "Why Liberalism Failed is a polemic, if an elegantly argued one, and it contains some of the drawbacks of the genre."[1]

The paleoconservative Paul Gottfried wrote in The Independent Review that, while he agrees with much of the criticism of liberalism, he also finds several idiosyncrasies in the book, describing it as "an anti-modernist Catholic polemic that has elicited praise and support from unexpected admirers."[8]

Writing for the National Review, Christian Alejandro Gonzalez was critical of the book, arguing that "Deneen's critique of liberalism exhibits an undue nostalgia for the past and ingratitude for the virtues of the present." He added that the book "combines Marxist economic protestations with social-conservative moral sensibilities to produce a critique of the classical liberal project."[9]

Writing for Newsweek, Jonah Goldberg agreed with Deneen: "There are a myriad downsides to radical individualism. America's troubles today are inextricably linked with the breakdown of the family, local institutions, communities, organized religion and social trust." However, Goldberg concluded, "An illiberal order that allows people to say and think what they want, innovators to create what they want and citizens to maintain loyalties to things other than the perpetuation of the regime is an oxymoron. Which is why I would rather live in a society that often fails to live up to its Liberal ideals than in one that succeeds in forcing me to bow down to illiberal ones."[10]

In a review for The Washington Times, Aram Bakshian wrote that the book "lucidly explains how liberalism has trapped itself in its own labyrinth" but fails to offer a credible alternative to it. Bakshian is particularly critical of Deneen's propositions for a new post-liberal society. Bakshian argues that such vision "totters on the edge of New Age absurdity" and compares them to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's ideal of the "noble savage."[11]

Writing for Jacobin, Lyle Jeremy Rubin said that the book is "a bold, seasonable, and at times, welcome estimation of the liberal status quo — yet one that nonetheless suffers from the significant blind spots and prejudices of its author." He argued that the book's "anticapitalist conservatism" comes "far short of liberation."[12]

The conservative political journal American Affairs has published commentaries on the book by Polish philosopher Ryszard Legutko and Harvard University law professor Adrian Vermeule.[1][13][14]

Jackson Lears and Cornel West have praised the book.[12]

(Richard Sennett, b.1943)

Richard Sennett (born 1 January 1943) is an American sociologist who is the Centennial Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics and former University Professor of the Humanities at New York University. He is currently a Senior Fellow of the Center on Capitalism and Society at Columbia University.[1] Sennett has studied social ties in cities, and the effects of urban living on individuals in the modern world.

He has been a Fellow of The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the Royal Society of Literature. He is the founding director of the New York Institute for the Humanities.

Early life and education

Sennett grew up in the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago,[2] to a Jewish[3] family of Russian emigres. As a child he trained in music, studying the cello. When a hand injury and botched operation to fix it[4] ended his musical career, he entered academia. He studied under David Riesman, Erik Erikson, and Oscar Handlin at Harvard, graduating with his Ph.D. in the History of American Civilization[5] in 1969.[6] His intellectual life as an urbanist came into focus during the time he spent as a fellow of the Joint Center for Urban Studies of Harvard and MIT.[7]

Career

Sennett's scholarly writing centers on the development of cities, the nature of work in modern society, and the sociology of culture. Families Against the City, his earliest book, examines the relationship between family and work in 19th-century Chicago. A subsequent quartet of books explores urban life more largely: The Uses of Disorder, an essay on identity formation in cities; The Fall of Public Man, a history of public culture and public space, particularly in London, Paris, and New York in the 18th and 19th centuries; The Conscience of the Eye, a study of how Renaissance urban design passed into modern city planning, and Flesh and Stone, an overview of the design of cities from ancient to modern times.[citation needed]

Another quartet of books is devoted to labor. The Hidden Injuries of Class is a study of class consciousness among working-class families in Boston; The Corrosion of Character explores how new forms of work are changing our communal and personal experience; Respect probes the relation of work and reforms of the welfare system; and The Culture of the New Capitalism provides an overview of these changes. Authority is an essay in political theory; it addresses the tools of interpretation by which we recast raw power into either legitimate or illegitimate authority.[citation needed]

Sennett is working on a project called "Homo Faber", exploring material ways of making culture. The first book in this series is The Craftsman (2008); subsequent volumes are Together: The Rituals, Pleasures, and Politics of Cooperation (2012) and Building and Dwelling: Ethics for the City (2018), on the making of the urban environment.[8][9]

In the public realm, Sennett founded, and for a decade directed, the New York Institute of the Humanities at New York University. He then chaired a United Nations commission on urban development and design.[10] As president of the American Council on Work,[11][12][13] Sennett led a forum, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, for researchers trying to understand the changing pattern of American labor. Most recently he helped create, and chaired, the LSE Cities Programme at the London School of Economics. The Urban Age project also emerged as a product of the research and ideas by Sennett and others at LSE Cities. In 2006, he chaired the jury at the Venice Biennale.

In 2024, Sennett published The Performer: Art, Life, Politics, which is intended as "the first in a trilogy of books on the fundamental DNA of human expression: performing, narrating, and imaging."[14] The Performer examines a wide range of human roles and interactions from nightclubs to political rallies throughout history to understand the role of performance in every human life.[4]

そして『The Culture of the New Capitalism』は、こうした変化の概観を提供している。

2024年、セネットは『The Performer: Art, Life, Politics』を出版した。
