ウィルヒョーとボアズ
Rudolf Virchow and
Franz Boas
☆
| Boas' septuagenarian
reminiscences were quite consistent with
the general character and overall significance of his work in physical
anthropology. But they are not fully adequate for an understanding
of his contribution. It is quite true that he came to
physical anthropology from ethnology, and that he was primarily
concerned ( in the words of a close friend) with "the bearings of
the anthropological upon the ethnological" -with the utility of
physical anthropological data for "the elucidation of historical
problems." But both through his ties with Rudolf Virchow and
through the process of his own self-professionalization in the
late 1880s and early 1890s, Boas had become well grounded in
European physical anthropology even before he began his studies
of children's growth. By 1894, Topinard had in fact described
him as "the man, the anthropologist I wished· for in the United
States"; .and in 1895, Boas spoke of himself as "struggling alongso
far practically alone" for the advancement of physical anthropology
in this country. As late as 1899, Boas was in fact publicly
defending physical anthropology against just the sort of skepticism
with which Cummings greeted Ripley's work.11 |

| On the other hand, if he wrote
as an insider and an advocate,
the man T opinard had been waiting for was never a physical
anthropologist of the traditional kind. It is not simply that Boas
was largely self-trained and without background in medicine or
anatomy. The positive influences which affected him interacted
with his scientific outlook and ethnological orientation to give his
physical anthropology a rather special stamp. Insofar as Boas had
a master in this area, it was Rudolf Virchow. Virchow was in
many ways a "typical anatomist-anthropologist of his period,"
measuring skulls in the laboratory and schoolchildren in mass
anthropometric surveys. On the other hand, Virchow's work in
cellular pathology had given him an orientation toward biological
process that not only made him a critic of Darwinism, but also
made his outlook quite historical and environmental. One had to
study "the variations of the constituent cells" of specific organisms
in order to draw conclusions about evolution, in order to distinguish
secondary deviations from primary, to determine what
was and what was not hereditary. This orientation carried over
to Virchow's anthropology. He was one of the few in this period
who allowed for some environmental modification in the form of
the head. And if his skeptical attitude toward evolution inclined
him to polygenist views on the origin of races, he nonetheless
rejected the notion that "theromorphisms" ( or apparently reversionary
characteristics) were any evidence of racial inferiority.
Although his physical anthropological training with Virchow was
limited, Boas' later eulogy of Virchow and the character of his
own physical anthropology leave no doubt of Virchow's influence.

| There is much in Boas' work to
tie him to the tradition of neoLamarckian
direct environmentalism which was so widespread in
the late nineteenth century. Several of his intellectual antecedents,
including Rudolf Virchow, clearly entertained the possibility that
certain acquired characteristics were inherited. Boas hims~lf
c?nstantly
emphasized the functional and environmental modificat10n
of physical type. In 1 894 he went so far as to say that there were
few racial differences in bodily proportions which could not "be
explained by functional causes." Certain of his contemporaries
interpreted his headform study in neo-Lamarckian terms, and
Boas himself, in responding to Radosavljevich, specifically mentioned
the inheritance of acquired characteristics as one of the
questions of biological process which was raised but not answered
by his data. On the other hand, in 1 899 he felt it unlikely t~~t ~he
influence of muscular development on bone structure could brmg
about an entire change of form." In 1909 he found no evidence to
support Frederick Starr's view that Europ_eans in A1!1eri~a were
approaching the physical type of the Indian. And m_ ~is mo_re
cautious comments on his headform results, he explicitly discounted
the possibility that they represented "any fundamental,
hereditary changes in the hereditary character of populations." 42 |

| Given the situation in biology
around the turn of the century,
there were several alternatives open to the physical anthropologist.
He could go on measuring heads and computing cephalic indices
on faith. He could employ Mendelian concepts to buttress essentially
pregenetic/ racial generalizations. Or he could set about in
a limited empirical way to try to introduce a dynamic point of
view into physical anthropology, testing conflicting theories of
heredity and of the relative weight of heredity and environment,
trying to see how in fact local populations were subject to
microevolutionary
processes. Franz Boas did the latter. His immediate
influence on physical anthropology was limited. He had few students
in this field, and the fruitfulness of his own work was curtailed
by the fact that it was carried on in essentially Galtonian
terms before the union of biometry and Mendelism in modern
population genetics. By and large, physical anthropology developed
for the next several decades in terms of traditional assumptions
and methods. But when a "new" physical anthropology
emerged around 1950, it bore marked, if only analogical, similarities
to Boas' thinking. His approach to local differentiation is
analogous to the modern concept of "random genetic drift"; his
concept of local type is remarkably similar to the genetic concept
of "population"; his conception of human plasticity under environmental
influences is in a general way quite consonant with
the modern view. But the main similarity is a common evolutionary
dynamism. Despite the coolness toward Darwinism which
he inherited from Virchow, Boas was in a certain sense much
more evolutionary than many of his physical anthropological
contemporaries.
He had a definite idea of what a rigorous evolutionism
required in terms of process on the population level. 49 |

| To a greater degree than Putnam, and in a quite different way than Powell, Boas saw the development of anthropological research and theory as inextricably bound up in the instit~tion~l nexus of anthropological activity. As early as 1885, dunng_ his first visit to this country, Boas discussed his scientific plans m a specifically organizational context-his first goal was to organize "a society which does systematic research in the Arctic area." A year and a half later, when he had settled in New York and committed himself to ethnology, his theoretical attack on Powell and Mason was followed by an attempt to reorganize in New York the long dormant American Ethnological Society. At one level, this conjunction may be viewed simply as pa:t of the normal activity of an ambitious young scientist in a relatively new field. But in the context of Boas' later activities, it seems likely that he already had a sense of the importance of establishing a solid base of institutional power to promote his anthropological viewpoint. In his later eulogy to Rudolf Virchow, who in many ways provided a model for his own scientific activity, Boas rather pointedly emphasized that Virchow's "far-reaching influence" was closely tied to his "leading part in the organization of anthropological work in Germany." 15 | パッ

| In young Boas' personal version
of the ideals of 1848, the
political, the general intellectual, and the :.pecifically scientific
become so intertwined that they are not easily separated. He
wanted to "live and die" for "equal rights for all, equal possibilities
to learn and work for poor and rich alike." So also he could
only be happy as ''a member of humanity as a whole," working
"together with the masses toward high goals." But "all that man
can do for humanity is to further the truth." Thus, equality of
opportunity, education, political and intellectual liberty, the
rejection
of dogma and the search for scientific truth, and identification
with humanity and devotion to its progress are all part of
a single outlook-a single left-liberal posture which, as in the case
of Rudolf Virchow, is at once scientific and political.19 |

| And indeed, this was the case.
Boas later said that his anthropogeographical
conclusions in Baffin-Land were "a thorough disappointment"
to him: the immediate environmental influences
were "patent" and the study was too "shallow" to illuminate the
"driving forces that mold behavior." Exactly when he came to
feel this is unclear, but when he published his purely ethnographic
data in The Central Eskimo in 1888, there was little trace of the
geographical determinism of the earlier study. Certain later comments-
and the fact that The Central Eskimo was written during
the winter of 188 5-86-suggest that the context of the change
may well have been the year he spent working at the Royal
Ethnographic Museum in Berlin, while he was sweating out the
interminable process of his habilitation. There, "under the leadership
of Adolf Bastian and Rudolf Virchow" and in association
with a group of brilliant young ethnologists, the movement from
the geography of migration sagas to the ethnology of myth and

| When Boas went to England during
the late spring of 1889, he
must have had at least indirect contact with Galton's work. In
any case he was later in correspondence with Pearson, and it is
clear from numerous references to Galt on that Boas' point of view was
developed in a Galtonian context. On the other hand, a
statistical approach to physical anthropology must have been very
congenial to a man of mathematical bent with a doctorate in
physics, but without background in anatomy or medicine. And if
we can judge from a paper which was apparently based on a
course Boas introduced at Clark in 1 891, Boas' "Application of
Statistics to Anthropology" was to a considerable extent an independent
development. Where Galton was preoccupied with
showing that biological phenomena were distributed according
to the "normal curve" of probability, Boas was much more interested
in those cases "in which the observations are not distributed
according to probable errors." Characteristically, he was
interested in biological process: in race mixture, in growth, in
environmental factors-in short, in all the factors that might produce
asymmetries in the distribution of traits. He argued that an
apparently "normal" series might in fact contain several distinct
types. Thus a separate analysis .of the western and eastern tribes
of the Great Lakes region revealed two types within what was at
first glance a normal distribution. The definition of anthropological
types was therefore possible only on the basis of a "critical
study of distributions" and a "comparison of the variability of
measurements." Although their most relevant work was not published
until later, it was in attacking problems similar to these that
Galton's disciples Weldon and Pearson were doing the early work
in biometry. Similarly, Boas was an independent innovator in
statistical
methods. Before 1 896, when Pearson published his first
important elaboration of Galton's theory of correlation, Boas had
already developed a method for the study of correlation in the
motor abilities of schoolchildren. When toward the end of the
1890s Charles Davenport and J. W. Blankenship introduced biometric
methods to American biologists, Boas, with a trace of an
innovator's self-satisfaction, was able to draw on the experience of
"anthropologists" to offer the newcomers some critical comments
on "A Precise Criterion of Species." 14 |

| Here, then, was the equipment
and the point of view which
Boas brought to physical anthropology in the early 1890s. From
Virchow, and from his own self-professionalization in the field
and at Clark, he had an insider's familiarity with the classic
tradition
of European physical anthropology, which attempted to distill from the
measured variety of human forms the underlying
hereditary "races" or "types." But also from Virchow, and from
his own ethnological orientation, he had a commitment to the
investigation of the processes which governed the formation of
types and their expression in given individuals and groups. From
biometry and statistics, he had a sophisticated method both for the
comparative study of type and the investigation of process. All
of this was conditioned by his general scientific point of view.
As in the study of cultural phenomena, Boas was extremely sensitive
to the problem of arbitrary classification. Although the
problem presented itself somewhat differently in physical anthropology,
the issue was similar to that in the debate with Mason
over "technological species." In dividing men into classes for the
purposes of comparative statistical study, one must not endow
these classes with greater reality than the actual reality of the
individuals who composed them, except as rigorously inductive
statistical analysis revealed underlying relationships. And one
must not mistake a purely statistical relationship for a biological
one. Finally, there was the underlying ethnological purpose
which impelled Boas' whole physical anthropological work. If
Boas resisted criticism of physical anthropology in 1 899, it was
ultimately to justify a study which he hoped might "contribute
to the solution of the problem of the early history of mankind."

| As the attack on Lamarckianism
reached its peak in the middle
1890s, social scientists reacted in various ways. Some writers
acknowledged the attacks only to dismiss them or argue their
irrelevance. Daniel G. Brinton in 1898 granted that Weismann

disuse, but went on to suggest that the work of Rudolf Virchow
in cellular pathology tended to support the older view. Brinton
argued that race traits should be considered pathological, and
