| Stigmata—this
is the original meaning behind the discussions of the sociology of
stigma and hidden identities that everyone loves so much. Since it is
said that St. Francis also manifested stigmata, they were understood as
a deeply blessed phenomenon following Christ’s death. One might say
that hidden qualities of deep piety naturally manifest themselves on
the body. So why is it that, in the present day, this has transformed
into a “dark history of the body”—a stigma—associated with a history of
mental illness or a criminal record, or something usually concealed by
clothing? A symbolic anthropologist might offer a clever explanation,
arguing that the sacred and the pure can be understood through a common
framework with the ugly and the impure (which, in a semiotic sense, are
polar opposites and thus possess a mirror-image structure). |
