Robert Vincs is an Australian saxophonist who had been experimenting for more
than 20 years before he released
Devic Kingdom (Extreme, 2007), originally conceived in the 1980s as a
duet of saxophone and computer (a computer programmed to behave like a jazz improviser).
Vincs (who also plays other wind instruments) is accompanied only by the
computer-generated percussive noises and by an upright bass.
His playing is passionate and melancholy, something like a more primitive and abstract version of Gato Barbieri and at times so influenced by ethnic music to
sound like a didjeridu. The 15 tracks cover a broad range of styles. As a whole,
though, fail to muster a cohesive vision.
