debuted as a filmmaker with the musical

He then directed the biopic Young Winston (1972),
the war movie A Bridge Too Far (1977),
Magic (1978),
the biopic Gandhi (1982),
and
A Chorus Line (1985), which is an adaptation of Marvin Hamlisch's stage musical.
Cry Freedom (1987) He specialized in biopics: Chaplin (1992), Shadowlands (1993), In Love and War (1996), Grey Owl (1999). His last film was Closing the Ring (2007).
