Peter Bacso (Hungary, 1928), who was an
assistant in Geza Radvanyi's Valahol Europaban, started out as a
screenwriter before debuting as a director with documentary-style movies
like
Nyaron Egyszeru (1963)
and especially
Nyar a Hegyen/ Summer on the Hill (1967)
The satirical and tragicomic A Tanu/ Witness (1968), banned until 1981, set in the 1950s, makes fun of Stalinist-era corruption and stupidity. Bacso was the exception in Hungarian cinema because his movies of the 1970s were almost all comedies. Forro' Vizet a Kopaszra/ The Agony of Mr Boroka (1972) is another satirical look at grotesque communist bureaucracy. Dopo Harmadik Nekifutas/ The Last Chance (1973) Szikrazo Lanyok/ Sparkling Girls (1974) Ereszd el a Szakallamat/ Let go of my Beard (1974): un inventore deve difendersi dai burocrati che vogliono denigrarlo e rubargli l'idea approfittando del fatto che si è lasciata cresciere la barba; satirico grottesco Riasztoloves (1977): tre ragazzi sbandati che hanno deciso di suicidarsi vagabondano su un'auto rubata alla ricerca del posto dove morire, ma uno solo avra` il coraggio di farlo davvero Bacso si converte alla commedia di costume con Zongora a Levegoben/ A Piano in the Air (1976), e tenta di commercializzare in senso spettacolare anche i temi impegnati, come Tegnapelott/ The Day Before Yesterday (1981). Te rongyos Elet/ Oh Bloody Life (1983) Hany Az Ora Vekker Ur?/ What Time is it Mr Vekker? (1985) Bananhejkeringo/ Banana Skin Waltz (1987) Titania (1988) Sztalin Menyasszonya (1991) Live Show (1992) Megint Tanu (1994) Balekok es Banditak (1996) Hamvado Cigarettaveg (2001) De Kik Azok a Lumnitzer Noverek? (2005) Majdnem Szuz (2008) Bacso died in 2009. |
