Ralph Bakshi (1938), born in Palestine from Jewish parents but raised in the USA, had a long and distinguished career as a cartoon animator and comic-strip designer.
He then debuted in cinema with the animated film
Fritz the Cat (1972), based on Crumb's comic strip,
and then mixed live actors and animation in
Heavy Traffic (1973) and
Coonskin (1975).
He turned to sci-fi with the animated Wizards (1977).
After adapting Tolkien in
The Lord of the Rings (1978),
he directed the animated musical
American Pop (1981).
