Sergio Citti, already an assistant to Pasolini, made his debut in 1971 with a neorealist film, Ostia, and during the period of the "Trilogy of Life", directed a novella-style film, Storie Scellerate/ Bawdy Tales (1973), more bawdy and less decadent: the stories are told by two criminals awaiting execution and encompass a wide range of gray bodily materialism (hunger and sex), with frequent vile and blasphemous vignettes. His parallel career alongside Pasolini ended with the masters death.
Casotto/ Beach House (1975) is an "open" and naïve Italian-style comedy, plebeian and comic, faithful to the seaside sexual repertoire and still marked by Pasolinis hunger for sex and food among the underproletariat. Due Pezzi di Pane/ Happy Hobos (1979) atones with a nostalgic and senile fable in which two mischievous itinerant musicians who frequent Romes taverns compete for the child of a woman who was secretly involved with both of them; to spare him an orphanage, they decide to raise him together; already dreaming of making him a cheerful rogue like themselves, he runs away from home to build his own life; in searching for him, the two simpletons discover the world of drugs and violence, entirely different from their own, and after being repudiated by the son, all they can do is wait for death on a bench. Il Minestrone/ The Soup (1980) is a coarse farce about hunger: the tragicomic and picaresque adventures of three wretches struggling with the daily problem of eating without money; a film of short stories, therefore. Sogni e Bisogni (1985) is a series of comic sketches for television. Later films include: Mortacci (1989), We Free Kings (1996), Esercizi di stile, segment Anche i cani ci guardano (1996), Cartoni animati (co-directed with Franco Citti, 1997), Vipera (2001), Fratella e sorello (2005).
