Robert DeNiro (1943), a product of New York's Italian-American community like Al Pacino, started out in Brian DePalma-directed comedies like
The Wedding Party (1963, released only in 1969),
Greetings (1968) and
Hi Mom (1970), but became an icon of New York cinema with
Martin Scorsese's films:
Mean Streets (1973),
Taxi Driver (1976),
New York New York (1977),
Raging Bull (1980) and
The King of Comedy (1982).
Meanwhile he gave two stunning performances in
Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 (1976) and
Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter (1978).
He wasted his talent in several minor movies, but struck gold again in Sergio Leone's Once Upon A Time in America (1984), in Terry Gilliam's Brazil (1985), in Martin Brest's Midnight Run (1988) and in Scorsese's films Goodfellas (1990), Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995), films in which his performance is almost baroque. He also tried comic roles, like in Barry Levinson's Wag the Dog (1997) and Harold Ramis' Analyze This (1999). In the new century he relaxed quite a bit. Scorsese still chose him for The Irishman (2019) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).
