L'Inglese Cary Grant (born Archie Leach in 1904), di origini umilissimi, si fece le ossa, ancora adolescente, nel musichall della nativa Inghilterra come cantante e acrobata. Arrivo` a New York in tour nel 1920 e vi rimase,
comico e acrobata itinerante dei vaudeville, finche' venne assunto come attore
a Broadway prima da Reggie Hammerstein (1927) e poi dai fratelli Schubert (1929)
e da William Friedlander (1931) per diverse
commedie musicali.
In 1932 Grant finally had a chance to act in a film and soon he was hired by Josef von Sternberg to play the rich playboy of Blonde Venus (1932), flirting with Marlene Dietrich. He played the playboy in several other movies, notably the ones with Mae West, She Done Him Wrong (1933) and I'm No Angel (1933). George Cukor "discovered" him for Sylvia Scarlet (1935), his first collaboration with Katharine Hepburn. This film proved his skills in the genre of the screwball comedy, and soon he was playing in farces like Norman McLeod's Topper (1937) and Leo McCarey's The Awful Truth (1937). La sua carriera cinematografica si è addentrata in due filoni apparentemente antitetici: la commedia, nell'accezione di George Cukor [Sylvia Scarlet (1935); Holiday (1938); The Philadelphia Story (1940)], di Howard Hawks [Bringing up Baby (1938), His Girl Friday (1940), I Was a Male War Bride (1949), Monkey Business (1952)] e di Frank Capra [Arsenic and Old Lace (1941)] e il thriller romantico alla Alfred Hitchcock [Suspicion (1941); Notorius (1946); To Catch a Thief (1955); North to North West (1959)]. The transition from comedy to thriller went through the war movies of the World War II period: George Stevens' Gunga Din (1939), Howard Hawks' Only Angels Have Wings (1939) George Stevens' Penny Serenade (1941), and Delmer Daves' Destination Tokyo (1943). He also starred in George Stevens' thriller The Talk of the Town (1942), Joseph Mankiewicz's light comedy People Will Talk (1951), and Blake Edwards' farce Operation Petticoat (1959). The Grass is Greener (1960), Charade (1964). He embodied the quintessence of both sophisticated and screwball comedy precisely because of his quasi-aristocratic elegance, when most comedians preferred the brash histrionics of the burlesque. He divorced four times and had his only child when he was 62. He retired from cinema in 1966 at the age of 62 and died in 1986 at the age of 82. |
