Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1970),
a very fictional biopic written by William Goldman about two real-life Wild West outlaws of the early 20th century,
Robert "Butch Cassidy" Parker and Harry "Sundance Kid" Longabaugh, whose gang probably holds the record for the longest string of train and bank robberies in US history.
The soundtrack includes one of Burt Bacharach's most famous songs, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head".
The film both glorifies and demystifies the bandits of the era. On one hand these bandits are just a farcical couple that descends from the likes of Laurel & Hardy, but on the other hand we are made to root for the criminals.
The law is represented by anonymous and faceless employees who act as a force of nature.
It is one of the
western movies that launched the self-parodizing genre: the protagonists and the plot ridicule precisely the heroic elements of epic westerns.
The film opens with vintage reels of western movies about train robberies and the likes.
A young man (Robert Redford) is playing cards and winning. A man accused him of cheating and challenges him to a duel.
Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) pretends to protect his friend and then casually mentions the name of his friend: the Sundance Kid, who has the reputation of being
an invincible gunslinger.
That's enough to scare the hell out of the challenger who quickly changes his mind about the duel.
Butch, who has just been released from prison, and the Sundance Kid ride out of town and Butch mentions that he'd like to move to Bolivia, a country rich with gold mines.
The duo ride into the hideout of their old gang. Butch has been dethroned by one of the outlaws but he quickly disposes of him and regains control.
The gang then attacks a train where a diligent employee of the railway almost gets killed for refusing to open the sealed car and the safe. The gang uses dynamite but then Butch checks that the heroic employee is ok.
The sheriff tries to organize a posse but can't find any man willing to risk his life against the famous gang. At one point a traveling seller of bicycle takes the stage peddling the new invention to the crowd that was uninterested in the posse.
Butch and the Sundance Kid watch the scene, amused, from the window of a brothel.
Butch, a frequent customer of the brothel, has sex with a prostitute while the Sundance Kid rides to his girlfriend Etta (Katharine Ross). In the morning Butch shows up at Etta's place riding a bicycle like an acrobatic circus clown.
The gang attacks another train and again they run into the diligent employee who refuses to open the door. Butch now respects him but nonetheless wants the money. The employee has seen that the railway installed a much stronger safe. The gang has to use a bigger dose of dynamite with the result that the entire car explodes and money flies in the sky. While the outlaws delight in catching the falling banknotes, another train approaches: the railway, determined to catch and annihilate the gang, has hired six rangers who are armed with modern rifles and ride in formation. The gang flees. Butch and Sundance order the others to split, but the rangers all continue to chase the duo. Butch and Sundance are amazed that the six rangers don't give up and keep tracking them down no matter what, clearly led by an experienced scout. Butch and Sundance try all sorts of tactics to lose the pursuers but nothing seem to stop them. They are cornered on a cliff overlooking a waterfall and eventually decide to jump into the water. They survive and reach Etta's place on foot. They read in the newspaper that the railway
tycoon has hired the rangers to kill them, not just to arrest them.
Butch convinces Sundance and Etta to follow him to Bolivia.
The film now shows fictional vintage photos of the trio reaching New York and then traveling by ship to South America.
Butch and Sundance soon realize that it's difficult to rob a bank if one doesn't speak the language. Etta is their language tutor and soon they become known
and feared also in Bolivia. Now wanted and pursued also there, they decide to
take up a honest job as bodyguards of an old gringo mine owner. The problem there is that bandits often attack and steal the payroll. That's precisely what happens right away: the old gringo gets killed and Butch and Sundance barely survive the ambush and kill all the attackers. Having failed even as honest citizens, they return to their life of crime, while Etta returns home.
Eventually, they are recognized in a village, and then hunted and cornered by the Bolivian police, and then massacred by the Bolivian army sent to reinforce the police.
Slaughterhouse Five (1972), adapted from Kurt Vonnegut's novel, tells the
disadventures of a soldier.

Billy Pilgrim vaga sperduto nella neve, cade in una buca, viene aggredito da
due soldati americani.
I tedeschi li catturano, li caricano con altri sul treno. Uno dei due
muore e l'altro, un energumeno nevrastenico, lo ritiene responsabile della sua
morte.

Nel campo di prigionia fa amicizia con un insegnante di mezza eta`, che lo
protegge dal nevrastenico. Gli inglesi sono organizzati, hanno persino un capo
che li rappresenta. Gli americani eleggono l'insegnante, il piu` saggio di loro.

Gli americani vengono trasferiti a Dresda, citta` quieta e umana, ma affidati a
un anziano comandante che applica la legge ferreamente e i cui soldati sono dei
ragazzini.

Arriva improvviso il bombardamento degli alleati. La distesa di macerie del
giorno dopo.

La fucilazione del suo amico comandante, solo perche' si era impossessato di una
statuetta scampata al bombardamento che era esattamente identica a una di sua
proprieta`.
Finita la guerra, Billy e` felicemente sposato con figli e abita nella tipica
casetta del borghese americano. Billy e` pero` ancora sotto shock dagli orrori
della guerra e immagina un mondo extraterrestre, Tralfamadore. Su questo
pianeta Billy vive con un cagnolino e con la sua attricetta preferita.
Ogni disgrazia sul pianeta Terra lo "sposta" un po' piu` permanentemente sul
pianeta Tralfamadore.
Muore mentre sta tenendo un discorso sul pianeta alieno: lo uccide l'ex
commilitone cattivo che lo aveva sempre odiato.
Sul pianeta alieno nasce un bambino dalla sua unione con l'altra umana
sequestrata.
Il suo film di maggior successo fu The Sting (1973), con la stessa
coppia di attori nei panni di due allegri imbroglioni a Chicago, all'epoca dei
gangster e del ragtime. Anche questo e'
un film che fonde parodia e nostalgia. Il suo merito principale e` la
ricostruzione affettuosa e ironica di un'epoca, quella della Depressione.
Johnny (Redford) e il suo anziano partner nero (due con men professionisti) truffano un sicario.
Il denaro pero` e' di un mobster che fa il banchiere, ma in realta' gestisce il
business delle scommesse clandestine, avvalendosi di amicizie potenti.
I suoi sicari uccidono il nero, proprio quando aveva deciso di cambiar vita,
e il suo giovane socio, per vendicarsi, convince un
leggendario avventuriero ubriacone, Henry (Newman), a dichiarare guerra al well-connected boss.
I due, aiutati da un popolo di sbandati e truffatori (tutti con il dente
avvelenato nei confronti del mobster), mettono in scena una
gigantesca truffa (an elaborate scam) ai danni del mobster.
Johnny fa anche un patto con la polizia, che vuole arrestare il mobster.
Henry e Johnny fanno finta di gestire scommesse dei cavalli, e fanno in modo
che il mobster investa tutti i suoi soldi sul cavallo sbagliato. Quando si
rende conto dell'errore, chiede che gli restituiscano i soldi. Ma la polizia
irrompe nel locale e arresta tutti, eccetto Johnny. Henry, vistosi tradito,
spara e uccide Johnny. La polizia spara e uccide Henry. Il mobster viene
portato via mentre i due cadaveri giacciono ancora sul pavimento. Ma appena
lui scompare, i due cadaveri si rianimano: era tutta una messa in scena per
prendergli i soldi e fargli credere che i due cospiratori sono morti.
La ricostruzione degli anni Trenta di "bulli e
pupe" e' fedele, ma tutti i personaggi sono delle caricature.
Great Waldo Pepper (1975)
Redford e` ex-aviatore reso leggendario
durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale da un eroico duello con un rivale tedesco, che si guadagna da vivere
esibendosi in acrobazie nelle cittadine della provincia americana e che finalmente corona il proprio sogno
di battersi con il fantomatico prussiano sulle scene di un film di Hollywood. Spettacolare, parodistico e
nostalgico.
Slap Shot (1977), il piu' farsesco dei suoi film, e' altrettanto
spettacolare ma polemico, al limite della metafora socio-politica.
Newman e' il capitano carismatico di una squadretta di
hockey, deciso a riportarla alla vittoria; non esita ad adottare uno stile di gioco moderno, basato sulla
violenza bruta, che ben si armonizza con il turpiloquio continuato dei membri dei suoi membri. Newman
e' spinto dalla disperazione: abbandonato dalla moglie, deve dimostrarle di non essere un fallito,
secondole spiccate convenzioni della societa' americana. Gli atleti vengono sfruttati senza rispetto; il
pubblico vuole violenza, sangue, ferocia, odio, e' quello del circo romano. E la legge del profitto regna
sovrana. Alla fine Newman, trionfatore ma ancora fallito (la moglie parte definitivamente), annuncia di
voler tornare al gioco pulito di un tempo (ancora nostalgia).
Metafora del pre-Watergate e del pre-Vietnam. L'affresco dell'America che ne
risulta e' comunque tutto negativo: una banda di barbari sfrenati, senza legge e senza morale.
Hill adotta lo stile marcatamente ludico del fumetto, fatto di iperboli e
deformazioni comiche, e non lesina scene di esagerazione pura (lo spogliarello del giocatore effeminato,
l'unico che si sia sempre opposto al gioco violento, e l'unico che riesce a conquistare sua moglie).
The Little Drummer Girl (1984) e' un giallo fanta-politico di Le
Carre'.
Funny FarM (1988) e' una commedia per Chevy Chase, scrittore in ritiro
in una fattoria.
