Aleshea Harris, born in Germany in a military family and then raised mainly in Mississippi, graduated at CalArts in Los Angeles and became a playwright and a poet.
Her plays include "What to Send Up When it Goes Down" (2016) and "On Sugarland" (2022).
She debuted as a filmmaker with
Is God Is (2026), partly a horror film and partly a family melodrama.
Rachel and Anaia are twins. Anaia is horribly disfigured by a fire that happened when they were children. Whenever someone insults Anaia, Rachel is there to defend her. They live together a relatively happy life.
One day they get a letter from their mother, which they haven't heard from in years.
Anaia wants to ignore it. Rachel convinces her to visit. Mom writes that she's dying.
They drive a long way to their mom's place and find her in bed, assisted by two women.
Mom tells them what happened. Their father had abused her and she had filed an order of restraint. He broke into the house, tried to rape her, poured gasoline on her while she was unconscious, took the children to look at her, then set her on fire. Anaia got disfigured because she tried to save her and she's been the "emotional" one since.
Mom now wants them to find and kill their father. Anaia is reluctant: their mom abandoned them and now she's using them to exact her revenge. Rachel instead wants the same revenge. There are only two clues: the husband had a lover, Divine, and a lawyer, Chuck.
The twins visit Divine, who is the priestess of a cult. She still worship their dad and keeps his belongings in an altar, waiting for the day that he will return. She had a child from him, Ezekiel. Rachel is revolted by the woman but manages to steal her address book. She finds the address of Chuck the lawyer. The twins reach his office and witness how he pays someone to beat him up. He can't speak because he has no tongue. Chuck tells them (writing on a white board) to stay away from their dad. Rachel hits him with a stone. He writes on the board how their father won the trial and, instead of thanking the lawyer, tore his tongue off. He feels that their father will come back to kill him and is preparing himself for pain and death.
He tries to dissuade them from their mission, but then tells them that their father had two more boys, also twins.
The twins resume their quest but are attacked by a masked motorcyclist armed with a hammer. He damages their car and chases them until they find a way to lock him into a barn. He then reveals himself to be Ezekiel, trying to save his father.
The car is unusable so the twins have to walk a long way.
He got rich and now lives in a luxury
mansion with her sons, the twins Scotch and Riley.
His sexy wife Angie has just decided she had had enough of her violence and
has a plan to escape. She gets in her (big expensive) car and starts driving away, finally happy.
Rachel and Anaia stop her and introduce themselves.
Angie swears she didn't know they were alive. Rachel insults her.
Angie gets angry that they are interrupting their escape and spits on Rachel.
Rachel bludgeons her to death with her stone.
Rachel and Anaia knock at the mansion and the twins Scotch and Riley open and Scotch welcomes them in thinking they are strippers sent by their dad. They even invite friends to watch the show. Rachel and Anaia go along and get dressed like strippers.
Then Rachel realizes that Anaia is pregnant of the old man she's been dating.
Rachel and Anaia start dancing for the boys. Riley is disgusted by the show and walks to the kitchen. Scotch insults Anaia, who walks to the kitchen with Riley.
As they are chatting, Rachel keeps dancing, seduces Scotch and then hits Scotch in the head with a stone and kills him. She then moves on toward Riley. Anaia stops her and helps Riley escape. But the ungrateful Riley turns against her and tries to kill her.
Rachel saves Anaia, but then Riley attacks Rachel and Anaia has to kill Riley with pruning shears. As Rachel lies unconscious, their father arrives and finds both his boys dead. Anaia drags the unconscious Rachel under a table and hides.
The father calmly prepares a snack for himself and invites Anaia to join him.
She threatens to kill him with Rachel's stone.
He then calmly asks her questions about how they murdered his new family.
His version of what happened is different: he says that he indeed set his wife on fire, but that she (not him) caused the girls to get burned because she grabbed both girls and wouldn't let go. He even starts crying. He says he's happy to become a grandfather. She believes he is sincere and drops her weapon. He immediately resorts to the cynical psychopath he is. Anaia confronts him with the stone saying that only one of them can be alive. Rachel revives and helps Anaia stone the man until he can't fight anymore.
They push him into the bath tub, pour gasoline on him, and light a fire.
Then they stare at him dying in extreme pain. But he grabs Rachel and pulls her into the tub to die with him.
Anaia flees the house that is burning. She walks to the bus stop and boards a bus.
She will give birth.
