The psychological horror American Psycho (2000) is a mediocre adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel.
Wall Street yuppie Patrick is engaged to Evelyn and sleeping with another girl. He hangs out with other yuppies and resents their arrogance.
Out of the blue, one night Patrick kills a starving homeless man in an alley.
One of the most arrogant yuppies, Paul,
mistakes Patrick for someone else and invites him to lunch.
Patrick brings Paul to his apartment and brutally murders him with an axe.
He then disposes of the body in a sack that he loads into the trunk of a taxi
and fakes Paul's London trip. Paul's girlfriend hires a private investigator
who comes to interview Patrick at his office.
Patrick hires two prostitutes, Christie and Sabrina, to have wild violent sex in his apartment and even makes a video of it.
Patrick then murders a model he picked up at a club.
Patrick invites his sad and lonely secretary Jean, who admires him, to his apartment. Patrick is about to kill her with a nail gun when his girlfriend
Evelyn calls and leaves a message on his answering machine that somehow stops him, and he tells Jean to leave.
The private detective finds out that Patrick had dinner with a coworker the night
that Paul disappeared. Patrick is surprised to have such a strong alibi.
Patrick hires again the prostitute Christie to have sex with her and with a friend, Elizabeth, at Paul's abandoned apartment.
He drugs both. While having sex with them, he murders Elizabeth.
Christie manages to escape and tries to hide but she finds dead bodies in the closet and in the bathroom, and the model's severed head in the freezer.
This all sounds a bit implausible.
Christie runs down the stairs and Patrick manages to hit her with a chainsaw from several floors up, another implausible event.
Patrick meets with Evelyn and tells her that he wants to break up.
Later he tries to shoot a cat. An elderly woman tries to stop him and he shoots
her dead. He then shoots and kills two cops who try to arrest him. He then walks
into his office building and kills the security guard and a janitor.
Hiding under his own desk, Patrick calls his lawyer and leaves a message that
he has killed about 40 people including Paul.
The following morning Patrick returns to Paul's apartment but only finds a realtor trying to sell it and no dead bodies.
Patrick calls Jean and sounds delirious. Jean, puzzled, searches Patrick's desk
and finds his appointment book, which mostly contains disgusting drawings of
sex and murders. Patrick then meets friend at a club. Seeing his lawyer, he
walks to him but his lawyer has thought the message a prank: he knows that
Paul is alive because he has just dined with him in London.
Patrick is confused as we are.
