Dustin Hoffman (1937), born and raised in Los Angeles, started acting at the Pasadena Playhouse like Gene Hackman and like Hackman moved to New York in 1960, looking for roles in Broadway theaters. After six years of successes, he was hired by Mike Nichols to play the college kid of The Graduate (1967). That film marked the beginning of a meteoric ascent among the stars of American cinema via John Schlesinger's Midnight Cowboy (1969), Peter Yates's John and Mary (1970) , Arthur Penn's Little Big Man (1970), Bob Fosse's biopic Lenny (1974), Alan Pakula's All The President's Men (1976), John Schlesinger's The Marathon Man (1976). The 1980s is the decade when Hoffman gave his most memorable performances, notably in Sydney Pollack's Tootsie (1982) and Barry Levinson's Rain Man (1988). But then he largely lived off his fame, starring in all sorts of films, from Wolfgang Petersen's Outbreak (1995) to Barry Levinson's Sphere (1998).
