Vojtech Jasny (Czechia, 1925) began with
documentaries co-created with Karel Kachyna, and then directed
Zarijove Noci/
September Nights (1957), photographed by
Jaroslav Kucera like the following ones.
After the four stories of Touha/ Desire (1958),
he made
Prezil Jsem Svou Smrt/ I Survived Certain Death (1960),
written by Milan Jaris,
and Procesi k Panence/ Pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary (1961).
He then made the lively allegory Az Prijde Kocour/ The Cassandra Cat/ When the Cat Comes (1963), a collaboration with veteran actor Jan Werich, and Vsichni Dobri Rodaci/ All My Compatriots (1968), a lyrical saga about a Moravian village, both of them starring Vlastimil Brodsky. and photographed by Jaroslav Kucera.
In 1968 he fled Czechoslovakia. After several television movies, he directed in Germany and Austria the German-language films Fluchtversuch/ Attempted Flight (1976), Ansichten eines Clowns/ The Clown (1976), and Mein Seliger Onkel/ My Late Uncle (1977). He then moved to Yugoslavia where he directed Gospodjica/ The Woman from Sarajevo (1980), an adaptation of Ivo Andric's novel, followed in Finland by Elakoon Itsemurhaaja/ Bis Spaeter ich muss mich Erschiessen (1984) and in Canada by The Great Land of Small (1987), written by David Sigmund. After the fall of communism, he finally returned to his homeland to make Navrat Ztraceneho Raje/ Return to Paradise Lost (1999).
