Thomas Ince).
His early films were:
Little Mary Sunshine (1915),
Twin Kiddies (1916),
A Sporting Chance (1919),
The Seventh Day (1921).
It's a western paraphrase of the Biblical legend of David and Goliath and a naturalistic fresco of southern life.
The White Sister (1923), based on Marion Crawford's novel (1909), is
a lengthy historical melodrama set in Italy.
Angela (Lillian Gish) is the daughter of a prince. Her half sister
Marchesa di Mola hates her because of a soldier, Giovanni, loved by both.
Giovanni has to contend with a count and a painter. The count is Angela's
official fiance, but Giovanni is planning to ask the prince for Angela's hand.
Unfortunately, the prince dies. Her elder sister burns the will, thereby
remaining the sole heir. Angela is expelled from the house and has to accept
the hospitality of the kind Madame Bernard.
Giovanni is about to leave for an African expedition and frantically looks for
Angela to bid goodbye and promise to marry her upon his return.
The expedition is destroyed by Arab bandits.
When Angela learns of Giovanni's death, she decides to become a nun and enroll
in a hospital. However, Giovanni survived the massacre and escaped from his
captors, and is being treated at the same hospital.
Romola (1924)
alla commedia (One More Spring, 1935),
d'aviazione (Twelve O'clock High, 1955)
al melodramma sentimentale (il noioso Love is a Many Splendored Thing, 1955),
adapted from Han Suyin's novel "A Many-Splendoured Thing" (1952).
A beautiful woman of British and Chinese descent, Suyin, is a doctor
in a hospital of the British colony of Hong Kong in 1949. She is overwhelmed
by the refugees of the civil war that is raging in China.
At a rare appearance at a party she meets
Mark, a USA war correspondent in charge of covering the war.
Despite being told by her boss John that Mark is married (although not in love
with his wife), she accepts an invitation to dinner and tells him that she is
the widow of a general.
After a few more encounters, she begins to fall in love and gets afraid. She
decides to visit her relatives in China, where she hasn't been for several
years. He follows her and asks her to marry him. Their situation is not easy,
since her British passport could be revoked and his divorce is far from certain.
Last but not least, neither her family nor her friends approve of a Chinese
woman dating a Caucasian man. During a vacation a fortune teller predicts a long
life together for the couple. Instead the very night Mark receives the news of
the Korean invasion and decides to fly away. Back at the hospital, she is told
that she stands to lose her job. A Chinese colleague tells her that it's because
she's not a Caucasian and urges her to return to China, where she would welcome
and be given an entire hospital. She is ready to sacrifice everything for
Mark, but then she is read the news that he died in Korea.
His masterpiece is
The Gunfighter (1950), a highly influential western that literally changed the course of the genre, depicting a tired and melancholy gunfighter who meets
his inevitable destiny; more film noir than western.
a uccidere.
