Blake Edwards tried him in a melodramatic part in Days of Wine and Roses (1962).

La commedia farsesca con un tono di fondo drammatico, ma sempre a lieto fine, diventa comunque il suo pane quotidiano: The Notorious Landlady (1962, Quine), Irma la Douce (1963, Wilder), How to Murder Your Wife (1965, Quine), Fortune Cookie (1966, Wilder), which was his first collaboration with fellow actor Walter Matthau, The Odd Couple (1967, Saks), Avanti (1972, Wilder), Front Page (1974, Wilder), senza dimenticare capolavori della farsa come Great Race (1965, Blake Edwards) e della commedia sentimentale come April's fools (1969, Stuart Rosenberg), scoperto nel ruolo di uomo d'affari costretto a fare il cinico, come in The Out of Towners (1970, Arthur Hiller) e Save the Tiger (1973, John Avildsen).

He also directed himself and Matthau in Kotch (1971).

Later he ventured into sociopolitical themes like in James Bridges' The China Syndrome (1979), in Costi Costa-Gravas' Missing (1982) and in Oliver Stone's JFK (1991).

Later in his career, his most successful movies were the ones with Matthau, like Wilder's Buddy Buddy (1981) and Donald Petrie's Grumpy Old Men (1993).

He was the "everyman" of Hollywood cinema, and making fun of that everyman was a way to identify with all everymen and to make them feel good about their troubles and misadventures.

He died in 2001
