Mira Nair (India, 1957), after a series of documentaries, directed
two films co-written with Sooni Taraporevala: Salaam Bombay (1988) in Hindi, set in Mumbai's biggest slum, and
Mississippi Masala (1991) in English.
The latter, her first movie devoted to
the Indian diaspora,
is set in rural Mississippi and is an inter-racial love story.
After the mediocre Hollywood movies
The Perez Family (1995) and
Kama Sutra (1996), a tragedy of concubines set in a 16t century court,
she directed
Monsoon Wedding (2001), written by Sabrina Dhawan, another
big hit.
Then came
Hysterical Blindness (2002),
Vanity Fair (2004), an adaptation of Thackeray's novel,
The Namesake (2006), an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's novel,
the diligent biopic Amelia (2009),
The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), which was an adaptation of Mohsin Hamid's novel,
and finally a better film,
Queen of Katwe (2016), written by William Wheeler, set in the
slums of Uganda.
