Marathi filmmaker
Jabbar Patel (India, 1942) started out in theater, producing
Vijay Tendulkar's influential plays "Ashi Pakhare Yeti" (1970) and "Ghashiram Kotwal" (1973), before directing three films about political corruption scripted
by Tendulkar:
Saamna/ Confrontation (1975), also dealing with magic,
Sinhasan/ The Throne (1979),
based on two novels by Arun Sadhu,
and
Umbartha/ Threshold (1981), based on
Shanta Nisals autobiographical novel "Beghar" and
starring actress Smita Patil,
that also adds a feminist theme.
Patel also directed the
musical blockbuster Jait Re Jait/ Win Win (1977), an adaptation of Gopal Nilkanth Dandekar's novel.
Highlights of the 1990s were
Ek Hota Vidushak/ Once There Was A Clown (1992), scripted by the
writer Purushottam Laxman Deshpande,
about Maharashtra's traditional "tamasha" theater,
and Mukta (1994).
He turned away from his home language for the
biopic Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (2000), in both English and Hindi,
and Teesri Azadi (2006) in Hindi.
