Osgood Perkins specialized in horror movies starting with The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015), whose demonic theme is a bit ridiculous and whose structure is frustrating, despite an interesting premise. Katherine, a student, has a nightmare that her parents have died. She faces a wall calendar and crosses the day before her parents are supposed to pick her up for spring break. She is a freshman in a girl-only Catholic boarding school. The headmaster summons her to tell her that he won't be able to attend her final performance and she's clearly disappointed. We then see the older Rose pose for a professional photograph. Rose pretends to have a headache but in reality she thinks she is pregnant, something to be very ashamed in that Catholic school. The day comes that parents are coming to pick up the girls. Kat performs at a piano. Rose attends the performance. The two girls are left behind: their parents don't show up. We learn that Rose has lied to her parents about the pickup date so that she can remain at the school, but there are no explanations for the silence of Kat's parents. Two servants who live at the school are their only company while it starts snowing outside. In the evening Rose's boyfriend comes secretly to pick her up. Kat is alone at the school, waiting for news from her parents. The phone rings but we don't see if she picks it up.
The film moves to a different time. Joan is at a bus station with visions of a mental institution. We understand that she escaped. She makes a phone call but the phone number does not exists. She studies a map for how to reach the boarding school. It is very late and there's noone else in the bus station. A middle-aged man, Bill, finds her sitting on a bench. Bill is worried about her and offers her a ride. His wife Linda is annoyed but can't stop him.
Rose returns to the boarding school. She and her boyfriend hardly speak. Obviously she just told him that she's pregnant. Rose looks for Kat and finds her in the boiler room, apparently praying in front of the boiler.
Back to Joan. Since it's very late, Bill and Linda stop at a motel and get Joan a room. She has visions of being shot by a policeman. Bill comes to pick her up and tells her that she reminds him of his own daughter, who died nine years earlier: Rose. It's the photograph that we've seen Rose take with a professional photographer. Bill and Linda are on their way to lay flowers on her tomb.
Back to Kat and Rose. Kat tells Rose that she spoke with the headmaster. Kat is behaving erratically, making Rose uncomfortable. At breakfast she insults the two servants. She looks at them with eyes full of hatred. Just then the phone rings. The servants receive some alarming news (that Kat's parents have been found dead?) and tell Rose to shovel the snow because the headmaster is returning. The following morning the headmaster returns, but in the sheriff's car and accompanied by the sheriff. They find horribly mutilated corpses.
Now the film rewinds to the moment that Kat crossed the day on the wall calendar. She makes a phone call to her parents but instead hears a demonic voice. She performs at the piano for the school. Then alone in the school she hears the phone ring. Now we see that she picks it up and the demonic voice tells her that her parents have died and orders her to kill everybody. Kat murders the servants with a knife, stabbing them repeatedly. Rose returns from shoveling the snow and goes to sleep. In the morning she discovers that she has menstruations: she is not pregnant. But then she also discovers the corpses. Kat hunts her down, kills her and beheads her. The headmaster and the sheriff enter the school and find the beheaded corpses. They find Kat praying in front of the boiler, offering the severed heads as a sort of sacrifice. The sheriff shoots her. It's the recurring vision that Joan has of a cop shooting her. Kat is interned into a mental hospital, strapped to a bed.
Back to Joan, which we now know is Kat nine years later, escaped from the mental hospital. Joan kills Bill and Linda and then beheads their corpses. She stores their heads in her suitcase and walks towards the school, which is permanently closed. She enters the boiler room but the whole place is dark and frozen. We see flashbacks of when the headmaster performed an exorcism on her to expel the demon who possessed her. Joan walks out in the snow and starts crying. It's implied that she is crying not for the crimes she committed but because her demon is gone.
