Already a successful Bengali actress,
Aparna Dasgupta-Sen (India, 1945) debuted as a director with the
melancholy melodrama 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981).
She only directed two films in the next 14 years:
Paroma (1984) and Sati (1989).
Sen then directed
Yugant (1995) and
Paromitar Ek Din/ House of Memories (2000),
before the three English movies:
Mr and Mrs Iyer (2002), a love story in the middle of inter-religious riots,
15 Park Avenue (2005) and
The Japanese Wife (2010).
She then directed three movies in Bengali:
Iti Mrinalini/ An Unfinished Letter (2010),
Goynar Baksho/ The Jewellery Box (2013) and
Arshinagar (2015).
Saari Raat
(2015) was her first in Hindi.
Her English film Sonata (2017) was an adaptation of
a play by Mahesh Elkunchwar.
Rapist (2021) was her second Hindi film.
She acted in many films, notably Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's Antaheen (2009).
