The major big band of the hard-bop era was perhaps the one led by the White Canadian trumpeter Maynard Ferguson (1928), a former member of Stan Kenton's orchestra until 1953. His Birdland Dream Band (formed in 1956 in New York) sounded like a simplified and less bombastic version of Kenton's orchestra, with music composed and arranged by tenor saxophonist Bill Holman.
