The US psychologist Michael
Tomasello believes that human
civilization is so fundamentally different from the societies of other animals
because human cognition, at some point in evolution, became a
"collective", not only individual, process. This was originally a
small difference, but over time it has made a huge difference, because each
generation hands down a "culture" to the next generation. Each
generation can benefit from the experiences (e.g., discoveries and inventions)
of previous generations. And this causes an acceleration of cognitive
