The Language of
Elementary Particles Mass, spin, charge and so forth are the fundamental properties of
matter. But what exactly are they? They seem to be just verbal metaphors to
express the fact that there are ways and rules in which particles interact. For
example, an electron and a proton interact in a way that can be visualized by
presupposing a force called electrical force that operates on negative and
positive charges and assigning a negative charge to the electron and a positive
one to the proton. These properties, ultimately, are about patterns of
behavior. If we saw Mr. A buying the newspaper every day from the store of Mr.
B, we could conclude that there exists an AB force that operates between
negatively charged people and positively charged people that leads the
negatively charged ones to buy newspapers from positively charged people and
