Entropy was low at the beginning (at the Big Bang) and has
since been increasing. The destiny of the universe is, apparently, to expand
forever until it will be, for all practical purposes, empty, i.e. it will have
reached its maximum entropy and a state of permanent equilibrium. Black holes, in particular, have a lot of entropy
(the one black hole that dwells in the center of our galaxy has 100 times more
entropy than the whole observable universe). The US physicist Sean Carroll hypothyzed ("Spontaneous Inflation and
the Origin of the Arrow of Time", 2004) that the Big Bang may not be the
beginning of the universe but merely a state of transition from decreasing
entropy to increasing entropy. He noticed that space is not empty because of
the very "dark energy" that caused its expansion. This energy causes
quantum fluctuations that can create baby universes. The intriguing feature of
this scenario is that one can play the universe in both directions of time: there
is no arrow of time. Back to the beginning of the chapter "The New Physics" | Back to the index of all chapters |
