Tommy James and the Shondells (from Michigan) were perhaps the most conscious profiteers of bubblegum music: the rowdy gospel dance Mony Mony (1968), the brash blues-rock Hanky Panky (1966) by Greenwich/Barry, and Crimson And Clover (1968), a painful love tragedy with an electrifying distorted finale.

They also released an ambitious album, Cellophane Symphony (1969).
