Ruben Blades
(born in Panama), who had recorded his first album in the USA,
A Las Seis A Nueva York Los Salvajes del Ritmo (1969), and who had
debuted in Ray Barretto's band in 1974, became Willie Colon's main composer after El Cazangero (1975).
They released several influential albums together: Metiendo Mano (1977), Siembra (1978), the best-seller, with Pedro Navaja,
the double-album Maestra Vida (1980), Canciones Del Solar De Los Aburridos (1981), with Tiburon.
Blades then contaminated salsa with rock'n'roll, synthesizers and political issues on Buscando America (1984) and Nothing But The Truth (1988), finding perhaps the best balance on Antecedente (1988). In 1994 he ran for president of Panama (and almost won).
