Loved Ones is a band from the San Francisco bay area that started playing nostalgic garage-rock steeped in early British bands, leveraging on Bart Davenport's Van Morrison impersonations, as documented by the EP Boom Boom (Out Goes The Light, 1992) and originals such as Hold On and Crying In The Morning, but rapidly overcame the inferiority complex and jumped straight back to Chicago's Chess rhythm and blues school for the album The Price For Love (Hightone, 1993). Jaguar Blues, Hightone Hop and Devil's Moon are delicious numbers that revitalize the memories of Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Elmore James.

Better Do Right (Hightone, 1994) downshifts to Memphis Stax soul. Again, their interpretation is not merely nostalgic and is certainly not merely epigonic. Better Do Right and What Is Love rank among the best songs ever in that style.
