Matt Winegar is a little Paul Westerberg from Los Angeles who formed a duo with drummer Josh Freeze, Slider. Sudden Fun (A&M, 1997), originally recorded as Fremont (A&M, 1995), delivers a deafening pop in the style of Green Day, made of catchy melodies and driving riffs. I Wanna Go is the manifesto track of their style, but Corduroy and Up To Me betray the influence of Nirvana, on a more neurotic side that then pours into the slow and desperate Kurt Cobain-style ballad of Inside and into the post-grunge melodism à la Foo Fighters of Take Me Down. The carefree pop chorus of All Along then sounds out of place. The album would be too conventional and generic, if it weren't for the magical touch of Josh Freeze (former drummer for Paul Westerberg, Juliana Hatfield and Devo, and believe it or not, just a little over twenty years old), who ennobles entire songs, something that hadn't happened in a very long time.

Josh Freeze released the EP Destroy Earth As Soon As Possible (T.O.N/Stone Lizard, 1998), under the moniker Princess, and the albums The Notorious One Man Orgy (Kung Fu, 2000), Since 1972 (Outerscope, 2009) and the EP My New Friends (Outerscope, 2011).
