Free-jazz drummer Tom Surgal played on
Thurston Moore's
Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv
(Corpus Hermeticum, 1995). They formed a trio with
another drummer, William Winant, and recorded
Piece For Jetsun Dolma (Les Disques Victo, 1996) and
Lost To The City / Noise To Nowhere (Intakt, 2000).
White Out
i.e. the
New York-based
duo of Lin Culbertson (electronics) and Tom Surgal (percussion),
concocted anarchic pieces inspired by free-jazz improvisation
that sounded like
Sun Ra's cosmic jams and psychedelic freak-outs
on Red Shift (Ecstatic Peace, 1998), featuring
David Nuss of the
No-Neck Blues Band.
They also recorded
two albums with Jim O'Rourke:
Drunken Little Mass (Ecstatic Peace, 2000) and
China Is Near (All Tomorrow Parties, 2005).
The double-disc Senso (Ecstatic Peace, 2009) documents a live collaboration with Jim O'Rourke and
Thurston Moore
of december 2004.
It contains two 40-minute pieces:
Fear Of Fear (Of Fear) and
The Eyes The Mouth.
White Out continued with
Asphalt and Delay (audioMER, 2011)
and
Accidental Sky (Northern Spy, 2015), a collaboration with Nels Cline.
