Des'ree Weekes is a London-born black singer-songwriter in the tradition of Joni Mitchell but with a folk-jazz-soul vocal style reminiscent of Phoebe Snow, and with an emphasis on spiritual themes. Mind Adventures (Epic, 1992), arranged by multi-instrumentalists Phil Legg and Ashley Ingram, sounded a bit awkward. Both her positive message and her fusion of Caribbean rhythms, European melody and American rap. came to focus on I Ain't Movin' (550 Music, 1994), which contains the catchy hit You Gotta Be and sold 16 million copies in ten years. her vocal style further strengthened on Supernatural (1998), largely eclipsing the music and the lyrics.
