New Zealand's comedy duo Flight Of The Conchords (Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement) became famous thanks to a tv show on which they performed goofy soul, hip-hop and country ditties. Some of them were collected (and, alas, re-recorded) on Flight of the Conchords (Sub Pop, 2008), notably Hiphopopotamus Vs Rhymenocerous, Think of It, The Most Beautiful Girl, Business Time, Boom, Robots. It was, of course, just another case of cult phenomenon created by a comedy show, an idea pioneered by Tenacious D. in 1999.
