Hot Chip, a British dance-pop combo led by Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor, belong to the
electroclash generation of LCD Soundsystem and Junior Boys.
They wed the devotion to song construction of a singer-songwriter and the
hedonistic instinct of a dj.
The cauldron of rap, soul and disco on
Coming On Strong (2004 - Astralwerks, 2005)
was funny if not creative
(Down With Prince, Playboy).
The exuberance of Over and Over and No Fit State on
The Warning (Astralwerks, 2006) was more intriguing because it was
matched to a less childish tone: the two leaders proved to be songwriters
and tunesmiths, not just designers of grooves.
Made In The Dark (Astralwerks, 2008) returned to a more primal
aesthetic of the "infectious" with the likes of
Shake a Fist, Ready for the Floor, Out at the Pictures.
Alexis Taylor debuted solo with Rubbed Out (2009).
Hot Chip's keyboardist and percussionist Joe Goddard debuted solo with
Harvest Festival (2009), a set designed for hardcore clubbers.
One Life Stand (Astralwerks, 2010) was a more personal work than any
of the previous ones, and the search for the hit had been replaced with
a search for the right atmosphere.
New Order and
Pet Shop Boys used disco beats for a broad
range of music, ranging from singer-songwriter's laments to romantic ballads,
from boogie rave-ups to catchy pop ditties.
Hot Chip tried a similar use of dance music but in this case (as in the case
of much of those bands' output) the result was mostly high-class wallpaper
muzak. Thieves in the Night is the one song that stands out.
Black keyboardist Pat Thomas launched a distinguished career in jazz.
