Wisconsin's Jaill, fronted by
Vinnie Kircher,
debuted with the retro garage songs of There's No Sky (Burger, 2009),
That's How We Burn (Sub Pop, 2010) was a more conventional work in the
old-fashioned idiom of midtempo psychadelic pop.
The truly forgettable melodies are rarely salvaged by the band. The
garage-y verve of Everyone's Hip, which is offered as the standout but
was originally released in 2006, sounds like
a poor cover of the Fleshtones without the saxophone (and ditto for Demon),
and the mildly lilting Thank Us Later sounds like a poor cover of the Hollies without the vocal harmonies.
Their rock'n'roll genes finally emerge in She's My Baby and
especially How's The Grave (the real standout),
replete with Chuck Berry-ian guitar breaks, but
it's a case of too little too late.
Waste A Lot Of Things is the poppy zenith of
Traps (Sub Pop, 2012), that has little else to offer.
