Ohio's (but Ethiopian born) Kenna Zemedkun debuted with New Sacred Cow (2003), an album that drew inspiration from the new wave and synth-pop of the 1980s but employed the production techniques of hip-hop and soul music of the 2000s. The album was recorded in 2001 but released only two years later. A similar fate caused Make Sure They See My Face (2007), mostly recorded in 2005, to be delayed till 2007.
