Canadian singer and songwriter Avril Lavigne became a star by mimicking
emo-punk and skate-punk on
Let Go (2002), a best-seller full of catchy melodies shouted over
raunchy guitars and fast drumbeats, and de facto a collaboration with
the songwriters and producers
of the Matrix
(Lauren Christy, Scott Spock and Graham Edwards).
Sk8er Boi is the only song that is even remotely related to real
punk-pop of the 1980s, with Complicated being a decent pop ditty and
the singalong
I'm with You being a weak companion and
Losing Grip revealing her real passion: the power-ballad.
Under My Skin (2004), which debuted at number one in the USA and Canada, produced by Raine Maida, Don Gilmore and Butch Walker,
contains hits in different styles: she transitions from
classic songwriter mode (Don't Tell Me) to
a softer version of
Green Day
(My Happy Ending) and finally can't help the
power-ballad Nobody's Home.
The Best Damn Thing (2007), produced by
Lukasz "Dr Luke" Gottwald (the producer of Pink's Who Knew and later of Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl), Butch Walker and Deryck Whibley,
further veered towards mainstream pop with
the melancholy ballad When You're Gone, the
bouncy Hot (a Dr Luke creation),
and especially
Girlfriend (another Dr Luke creation), which grafts
the silly refrains of bubblegum-pop into the verve of punk-pop.
Goodbye Lullaby (2011) brought in heavy-weight pop producers
Max Martin
and Karl "Shellback" Schuster (the producers of
Britney Spears, Pink and Taylor Swift)
besides Butch Walker and Deryck Whibley,
and delivered
the bubblegum-pop of What the Hell, the power-ballad Wish You Were Here and (surprisingly) the violently syncopated Smile.
Avril Lavigne (2013), assembled by a cast of producers that included
Martin Johnson, Peter Svensson, David Hodges, Matt Squire and Chad Kroeger,
opted for the dancefloor with the
bombastic dance-country-pop hybrid Here's to Never Growing Up
and the electronic dance-pop of Hello Kitty, while
country-esque male-female duet Let Me Go winked at Nashville and
Rock n Roll
Britney Spears
imitating
Joan Jett.
Head Above Water (2019) contains the
thundering Bon Jovi-esque ballad Head Above Water.
Love Sux (2022), architected by a cast of nine producers,
punk-pop energy and yielded Cannonball.
