Alpha Maid, the brainchild of London's Black guitarist, vocalist and producer Leisha Thomas,
debued with the EPs Spy (Curl, 2019),
Chuckle (2021)
and spresso (2023), the latter a collaboration with
Mica Levi
containing five miniature songs.
Spresso became the name of a power-trio: Mica Levi, Alpha Maid and drummer Zach Toppin.
After the EP Shed (2025), Alpha Maid released the debut album
Is This a Queue (2025), an original amalgam of acid-rock guitar and electronic beats.
The industrial dance 6-9
the horror drones and laments of Goat Rosetta
stage a significant revival of
Throbbing Gristle.
The freak-folk element is prevalent in
the sublimely psychedelic 2 Numbers (with Leo Hermitt on stoned vocals)
and the deranged
Why We Have To Move (with tribal drumming by Valentina Magaletti).
When it works, this is prime post-psychedelic music. The album's only drawback is that it feels tentative and incomplete.
